Several prominent Hollywood directors have been notoriously not okay with the popularity of the superhero genre, causing many Marvel and DC actors to defend it. But the way RDJ did it seven years ago was quite controversial.

Iconic director Alejandro González Iñárritu has revealed in an interview with The Independent that Robert Downey Jr never apologized to him over his controversial remarks on the director's Mexican roots.

The remark in question was made in 2015, when Iñárritu took a jab at superhero movies and called them "cultural genocide", only to receive a response from the Iron Man actor that "for a man whose native tongue is Spanish to be able to put together a phrase like 'cultural genocide' just speaks to how bright he is."

"I honestly could not care at all," Iñárritu says now, noting that RDJ "of course" has not apologized. "I am completely against what he said but I will defend his right to say whatever he wants. Anything he wants to say is fine, but for me it reads completely the wrong way."

While Marvel fans are always ready to defend their favorite genre, Downey Jr's remarks are still considered "racist", "gross", and "classless", even though the actor himself has not commented on them ever since.

However, Iñárritu notes that he "doesn't expect" an apology anymore, even though he is still ready to take a jab at the movie landscape we have now. When it comes to the director's view of the modern cinema, he is saddened by how "similar" everything is, while "original material is more suspicious every time – no matter how many awards you have."

Iñárritu's new movie, titled Bardo, False Chronicle Of A Handful Of Truths is available for streaming on Netflix.
