The phrase "Christopher Nolan is a genius" is thrown around a lot these days, and while the director has his detractors, the majority of cinephiles and critics stand by it.

The British auteur is best known for his auteur blockbusters, but his work adapting Batman comics has arguably influenced Hollywood far more than the likes of 'Oppenheimer ' ever did.

Here are 9 films that tried, but failed, to copy "The Dark Knight":

At its core, "The Dark Knight" franchise is a very grim project, full of tortured heroes, violent, demented villains and horrific crimes. And while the violent aspects of Nolan's Batman films are not the main reason why they have become such huge hits, they have become the thing that people tend to highlight when talking about Christian Bale 's Batman.

And that's exactly what other Hollywood directors decided to copy for their blockbusters. The movies mentioned above all tried to look slick, gruesome, and grounded, even if that aesthetic had nothing to do with the atmosphere of the franchises they belonged to.

And that's exactly why they all failed to steal Nolan's ideas. Not every story is made to be dark, and Nolan meticulously developed the atmosphere for "The Dark Knight" that other directors forgot to do for their films.
