Do you have any idea why Adam Sandler no longer reads critical reviews?

Because they turn out to be garbage. And he may well have a point there.

Try to remember how many times you went to the movies to see the best movie ever (according to reviews, of course) only to find it completely and miserably unwatchable? Well, it was even worse for Adam Sandler.

While discussing his basketball dramedy Hustle during a Netflix chat, Sandler shared (via) how it felt to read the reviews for Billy Madison, which he co-wrote with longtime friend Tim Herlihy.

"When Billy Madison came out… we were just like, 'Oh yeah, they're going to write about this in New York!' We grew up reading the papers, we were going to NYU. And then we read the first one and we were like, 'Oh my god, what happened? They hate us.' And then we were like, 'It must have been this paper,' but then 90 percent of the papers are going 'This is garbage.'"

That is what critics wrote about the film, which has become Sandler's signature work. It was also painful because "you know your grandmother's reading it," the comedian joked, adding that he feared the family would rally to his defense.

One "Wildly Inappropriate" Friends Storyline Had Even Actors Freaking Out

The actor said that when he was 17 years old, he never thought about critics. It was simple to him – you make a movie and people go and watch it. It is not that reading critical reviews is unpleasant. Movie critics "aren't going to connect with certain stuff and what they want to see," Sandler believes. He understands that some of the things he does don't click with them.

But what about his fans?

Some of the actor's fans believe it is the paycheck that matters, and Sandler's should be huge. They also argue that there's a problem with the critics. And the problem is that these people can't reckon with the fact that not every movie is meant to be a great masterpiece. There are a lot of movies that are still enjoyable.

As for Sandler's Billy Madison, a lot of fans say the movie brings back the heartwarming memories of childhood, and that is absolutely precious – because you can literally travel back in time to when you were young and your life was carefree and fun.

Although a lot of commenters are rooting for Adam Sandler, some say you should read critical reviews because otherwise you can't get any better. His movies get cult status, but they are stupid. If he had read the reviews, his movies wouldn't have gotten worse, one commenter said.
