All 3 Upcoming The Lord of The Rings Projects & Everything We Know
New movies and even an anime.
The Middle-earth on-screen universe continues to grow, and in addition to The Rings of Power show, there are new projects on the horizon that are sure to make the heart of any Tolkien fan beat faster.
We have collected all the confirmed projects and everything we know about them.
1. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power – Season 2
All fans of the show set in the Tolkien universe can breathe a sigh of relief – The Rings of Power has been renewed for a second season. That's the good news. The bad news is that we will probably not see the new season before 2024, and it will most likely be released around the same time as the first season – in the fall.
The writers didn't want to introduce Sauron in the first season because he would steal the spotlight and not allow the other characters to develop properly. Therefore, the Dark Lord was not revealed until the end of the last episode.
But just as Galadriel was the main character in the first season, Sauron will be the main character in the second one. We'll see where he has been, and what he wants. Sauron will not be completely evil, but a complex, morally ambiguous character. Given his speeches about wanting to save and heal Middle-earth, we can expect that Sauron won't be the main villain at all.
2. The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim
Anime fans, it’s for you – Warner Bros. Animation is working on an anime based on The Lord of the Rings universe.
The new project will be a never-before-told story focusing on the kingdom of Rohan and its ruler, Helm Hammerhand. Set approximately two centuries before the events of LoTR, the anime will follow the events surrounding Helm's Deep and the war between Rohan and Dunland.
Because of Helm's refusal to marry his daughter to the son of the Dunlending King, and because of longstanding grievances, a war begins. The king is forced to hide within the walls of the fortress that would later be named Helm's Deep.
The anime has an exact release date of December 13, 2024.
3. New Line Cinema's The Lord of the Rings movies
Warner Bros. will reboot the Lord of the Rings franchise, based on the universe created by John R. R. Tolkien, with at least one new movie about adventures in Middle-earth.
There are no details about what the future movies will focus on. But there is no doubt – the studio has big plans. Based on what is known about the Third Age, we can highlight the storylines that may attract the studio's attention – the story of the mysterious Tom Bombadil, a story based on the Aragorn’s past and his subsequent rise to the throne of Gondor, or a prequel about Gandalf.
Considering that there are no details yet, an adaptation is definitely not expected in the near future.
