Kunal Nayyar Gets Brutally Honest on Raj's Wardrobe: "Ridiculously Hideous"

It’s fair to say few characters in The Big Bang Theory were following fashion tendencies back in the day, and for some actors it was hard to reconcile with their characters’ clothing choices.

The storyline revolved around four nerdy scientists who (except for Sheldon) cared much more about gaining some success in personal life rather than revising their wardrobe, but there was one exception.

Among all the members of The Big Bang Theory’s gang, only Kunal Nayyar’s Raj Koothrappali was trying hard to find his fit in clothes, but was failing just as hard to do so — and that’s what ruined the entire thing for Nayyar.

Even though Raj might have been the only one who could actually afford expensive clothes or some good-looking vintage, his choice was rarely met with the audiences’ rave — and never with Nayyar’s excitement.

“I was like, ‘Oh, my God, like, I’m gonna have to wear these clothes.’ It’s very apropos to the character, obviously. But for me, I was like — I mean, if you watch what I wore that entire show, it’s ridiculously hideous, but also ridiculously good for the character”, the actor revealed during his appearance on The Official Big Bang Theory Podcast a couple of days ago.

Nayyar then added that Raj’s clothes somehow had their own toll on him personally as now he can’t even see all those sweaters that returned to the store shelves after being out of fashion for decades.

“It’s ruined for me. I can’t wear clothes that look like vintage Gucci sweaters or something that looks like Raj’s sweaters that’s in fashion now”, Nayyar said.

Some of the show’s fans might have thought Raj’s controversial fashionable choices were something he developed for himself, but that wasn’t the case either.

As Nayyar suggested, Raj’s style had a major shift in a flashback episode in season 3 where he met with the rest of the gang, resulting in him trying to copy Leonard’s style.

“If you go back and you realize, when we did the flashback episode and Raj is dressed like Miami Vice, he starts dressing like Leonard, is why he thinks that’s how you dress. And so he gets his fashion inspiration from Leonard, which is just sad”, the actor revealed.
