The new season of Bridgerton will be released in just over two weeks, so hopefully you've had time to get ready for the new social season!

Summary

  • The third season of Bridgerton is just around the corner.
  • Netflix has released a trailer showing Colin and Penelope's transformation.
  • The designers used color theory to convey the changes in their attitudes and personalities.

Not long ago, Netflix released the trailer for Season 3, and Polin fans are already obsessing over the transformation of their favorite characters.

It's all thanks to the costume, makeup and hair designers, who went all out with color theory to show how much both Mr. Bridgerton and Ms. Featherington have grown since last season.

Colin and Penelope's Season 3 Transformation

On April 11, 2024, a brand new trailer was released, the details of which can tell us a lot about the production quality of the new episodes. And of course, the main magnets of the new trailer are Colin (Luke Newton) and Penelope (Nicola Coughlan).

'In Seasons 1 and 2, we emphasized all the rounds, so his hair was quite round. His costume also had a lot of frills, so we didn't see his square jawline,' Erika Ökvist, the show's Emmy Award-winning hair and makeup designer, told TV Line about Colin.

Oh yeah, it's not just Colin's jawline that's gotten more defined, but everything underneath. The Athens sun is clearly working in a very surprising way!

The jawline has been revealed with a new hairstyle and more open shirts, while experience and charisma have been achieved with more robust eyebrows. Penelope has also changed: instead of bright and somewhat naive dresses, her garments are now more understated, emphasizing the character's growth and maturity. And it was color that proved to be the most important aspect of Colin and Penelope's transformation.

How the Bridgerton Crew Utilizes Color Theory

Color can say more than words ever could. And it is easy to see how much storytelling, emotion and ideas can be conveyed through carefully chosen color combinations in clothing and makeup. Designers actively applied their knowledge of color theory to express both the general mood of the London ton and also the feelings of specific characters.

In the case of Pen, color plays an important role in reflecting her more sophisticated persona in the new season. Though she wears the same wig as in Season 1, it appears much darker in the trailer.

'The reason why it doesn't look as bright, why it looks more sensual and elegant, is because the yellow in the dresses that she used to wear in Season 1 enhanced the red and the orange,' Ökvist explained.

Although the designers' work revolves around the actors and their characters, they must also consider the conditions in which a particular scene will be filmed. The location, lighting, and color of the set as a whole will determine how the characters themselves would appear in that environment. Clothing, hairstyles, and makeup must blend or contrast with the setting, something Ökvist learned while filming the sixth episode of Season 2.

'It's a garden party, but it was paved by white stone, so this sun just reflected straight back into the white flooring up into people's faces,' Ökvist explained. 'Even though [the extras] had the exact same makeup as they had in this beautiful church, they all looked like quite pale.'

As a result, the reflective brightness of the set was dealt with by creating strong contrast in the characters' faces through more pronounced blush and lips.

All of this speaks to the deep professionalism of the team behind the production of each episode of Bridgerton, and in Season 3, as the trailer suggests, we'll see even more skillful work with color and costumes. The first four episodes of Season 3 will be available on Netflix on May 16.
