You might have thought your pet is just a bit introverted, but the real reasons for such a behavior can actually be alarming.

Play, whether it’s with other dogs, toys or with their owner, is one of the essential parts in any dog’s life, helping them handle their natural instincts and react to their human’s commands.

However, some dogs don’t really get along with other animals and aren’t willing to interact that much with their owner, which is often explained by the specific type of their character. In some cases though, this can be a signal that your dog is going through tough times.

Why Isn’t Your Dog Interested in Play?

According to animal experts, there can be many reasons why dogs are indifferent towards their owner’s attempt to interact, including stressful situations, lack of socialization or health issues.

If your dog is clearly triggered by something, try to define what exactly causes their stress and get rid of it; however, remember that your pet will need some time to recover emotionally, so take longer walks, offer them sweet treats and new toys.

If your dog has a troubled past and has gone through living in a shelter or physical violence from a previous owner, it can also affect the way they interact with you and other dogs. Don’t put too much pressure on your pet, start with only a couple of minutes of play per day to let them know that nothing bad is going to happen.

Lastly, health issues or old age can also be the reasons, so consult your local vet or just let your dog be the way they are in case they’re not so active anymore because of their age.

What If My Dog Just Doesn’t Like to Play?

If this is the reason, animal experts recommend you don’t push your pet too much, since they won’t enjoy forced playing anyway. However, you can make gentle attempts by choosing the toy that your dog loves and playing with them for a short amount of time (3-5 minutes) per day.

Don’t forget to praise your dog for following the rules of the play and make sure they learn how to bring the toy back to you.
