Here's why Eleven and Mike can't get their happily ever after ending.

With the upcoming fifth season of Stranger Things set to wrap up the entire story of the show, there is a good reason to prepare oneself for a truly emotional finale. It definitely won't be exclusively about favorite characters dying but also about some of the arcs many people loved inevitably not receiving a closure.

According to a new Reddit fan theory, Mike and Eleven's love story is doomed. Not because their love is not strong enough, but rather due to how things seem to point at Eleven having to leave Hawkins for the Upside Down... forever.

Think about it.

As long as there is a powerful "sorcerer" like herself or Henry Creel, gates will continue to open between Hawkins and the Upside Down. Besides, it is fair to assume that the Upside Down is affected by the emotions of those who are trapped there.

When Number One was banished, it looked like a wasteland; when Will got captured, it looked like 1983 Hawkins. It sure looks like the Upside Down needs a person with powers who would turn it into a peaceful place.

But if that's Eleven, then she can's stay in Hawkins, and therefore can't stay with Mike, according to the fan theory.

"I think this idea is the one thing that can make the state of things different at the end than at the beginning and prevent the ending from being unsatisfyingly open-ended. Mike accepts that he can't be with Eleven, he grows up. Will and the other characters grow up, and there is a resolution," the theory author oliness explains.

Unless the show comes up with a way to somehow safely connect the Upside Down to Hawkins (and making Mike some sort of Eleven's king there?), their love story might head to a bittersweet ending.

Reddit Already Has a Perfect Stranger Things 5 Ending in Mind

However, the direction the showrunners will decide to take remains unknown until Stranger Things 5 premieres. Netflix has not yet announced the release date, but the writing for the season is already underway.
