Reshoots on Renny Harlin's thriller are a rare case of producers agreeing with test audiences, and now we know it was absolutely the right decision.

Renny Harlin has more than once taken part in the most unusual projects, which made people talk about him as one of the most daring and reckless directors.

Deep Blue Sea characterizes this director in the best possible way – there is hilarious action, black humor, and unexpected deaths of characters.

What Is Deep Blue Sea About?

The movie tells the story of a deep-sea station, where biologists are conducting research that should become a cure for mankind. The experiments get out of control when sharks, in whose genome the scientists have interfered, begin to hunt humans.

At some point, an accident occurs at the station, and the building quickly fills with water – now the ocean predators are in charge, and the humans are the victims.

Deep Blue Sea Originally Had a Different Finale Where Susan Survived

Like everything worthwhile, cinema is born out of suffering. Sometimes a movie is shot and then reshot for various reasons. Does that make the movie better? Not always. But sometimes reshoots are more than justified.

Horror tradition dictates that the final girl must survive, and the writers of Deep Blue Sea planned to save the life of Susan, the character of Saffron Burrows.

But since Susan was one of the culprits of the trouble the characters get into – she and her partner created super-smart and super-dangerous sharks – the test audiences were unhappy that she did not pay for her deadly invention.

In addition, Burrows acted in such a way that it was difficult to sympathize with her character. As a result, director Renny Harlin shot Susan's death scene in one day and gave the movie an unconventional finale with two men surviving.

The Deep Blue Sea Finale Reshoot Was a Rare Case Where It Actually Benefited the Movie

Fans still believe that this seemingly controversial decision was actually the right one. Redditor monsieurxander wrote:

“They made the right choice. She's not an outright villain, but she is ultimately responsible, and she makes good by sacrificing herself to keep it from getting out.

That makes her a more interesting character than the usual archetype.”

And it should be noted that Susan's death was just a good old shocking plot twist.
