Starring in Game of Thrones wasn't all fun and laughter, and the Daenerys actress sometimes found herself in tears because of what she had to go through.

Back in the day, Game of Thrones took over the world. The show captivated millions of viewers, launched numerous acting careers, and became a global phenomenon that changed the golden standard of TV series forever. With Game of Thrones, a new era began — both for television and for several actors who were part of this show.

For Emilia Clarke, her entire life changed when she bagged the part of Daenerys Targaryen. The aspiring actress was just 22 years old when she joined the project, and her career was off to a great start as Game of Thrones turned her into a worldwide superstar. Few actors can boast such an immediate and strong ascent to the top of the industry's food chain.

However, as you might have guessed, starring in GoT wasn't all fun and games for Clarke. The actress has always been vocal about the stress the show often put her through, especially when it came to nude scenes — but that wasn't the only thing that made her sick on the set of Game of Thrones.

The scene where Daenerys Targaryen eats a stallion's heart is among the most iconic (and gross) of the first season, but while the actress wasn't given a real heart, the substitute was also incredibly nasty.

"It was very helpful to be given something so truly disgusting to eat, so there wasn’t much acting required. They made the heart out of solidified jam but it tasted like bleach and raw pasta. I ate roughly 28 hearts throughout the days we filmed that scene. Fortunately, they gave me a spit bucket because I was vomiting in it quite often," Emilia Clarke shared with Uproxx.

Twenty-eight fake horse hearts and endless filled spit buckets later, the scene was finally complete, and Clarke was feeling horrible. Having eaten a load of the disgusting mixture and vomited out even more, she couldn't even feel happy that the scene was over — but alas, such was the price of getting to fly on dragons later in the show.
