Some stories just never go out of style.

Summary:

  • The Vow is a 2012 romantic drama film inspired by the true love story of Kim and Krickitt Carpenter.
  • Starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum, it was considered a commercial success, although it received mixed reviews from audiences and critics.
  • Since its release on Netflix on February 1, 2024, The Vow has become the platform's most-watched film in the United States.

The power that Netflix holds over American television and moviegoers cannot be underestimated. While many people judge the success of the platform on the strength of its original content, the reality is that Netflix now has the power to give a second chance to any show or movie that would otherwise be forgotten.

The renaissance of the legal drama Suits, which has taken over the internet since the show was acquired by Netflix, was just one example of how the streamer can help popularize the stories that deserve it. 2012's The Vow, a romantic drama starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams, is next in line for the same success.

In just a few days of availability on the platform, a heartbreaking love story based on true events has managed to completely capture the attention of viewers and climb to the top of the most-watched list.

Now sitting in first place, ahead of the just-released Orion and the Dark and the war genre classic Fury, The Vow proves that romance isn't dead.

Watch The Vow (2012) on Netflix

No matter how you feel about romantic dramas, The Vow is worth your attention for at least three reasons. First, it stars two Hollywood A-listers, Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum, who both give strong performances. Second, the story is inspired by the true story of Kim and Krickitt Carpenter. Finally, it is the perfect Valentine's Day movie.

The story of Paige Collins and her husband Leo revolves around a tragic memory loss that Paige suffers after the couple is involved in a car accident. Although she has no memory of the last few years of her life, which effectively erases Leo from her life, he remains fully committed to her rehabilitation, hoping that one day the memories will come back.

Although the movie takes a lot of creative liberties in retelling the story, and changes the narrative towards the end to make it more believable (and also more tear-jerking), it does a good job of portraying two ordinary people who are forced to face truly unexpected circumstances. And it definitely makes you think about what you would do in the characters' shoes.

While the movie wasn't very well received by critics at first, standing at 32% on Rotten Tomatoes, it got a lot more love from audiences, who rated it at 63%. Now that the movie has gone through the Netflix re-release, though, even that number may change.
