Press F for another wasted character.

Summary:

  • Grey's Anatomy is an ABC procedural medical drama that has been on the air since 2004.
  • Since Season 1, many characters have come and gone from the show. Those who stayed from the beginning have gone through major changes.
  • Miranda Bailey is considered a character who was butchered by poor writing into a copy of the arrogant Dr. Burke.

There's nothing more heartbreaking than watching your favorite character fall victim to poor writing decisions. Unfortunately, if there is one thing that all Grey's Anatomy fans have learned by now, it is that no one is insured against such a fate.

Even the most beloved and well-established personalities can be drastically altered to fit an overall narrative. This is exactly what happened to Miranda Bailey, brilliantly portrayed by Chandra Wilson.

And even though the actress assured fans that they wouldn't be seeing her exit of her own volition, some believe that it would be the best choice at this point, just to stop the torment that Bailey puts them through each and every episode. The transition that began about a decade ago still hasn't reached its peak.

What Happened To Miranda Bailey

The character started out very strong, being a resident at Seattle Grace in the first season of the show and guiding the main characters through all the trials and tribulations of the internship. She was stern, she was loud, but she was also extremely professional and knew exactly what she was doing. Her "no BS" attitude immediately won over many viewers.

Unfortunately, as the series progressed, she went through quite the downfall. While some believe the change in her demeanor was related to her becoming Chief of Surgery in season 12, others believe it started even earlier.

The lack of gratitude towards Ben, who quit his residency to support her in season 9, was a red flag that should have been noticed earlier.

The funniest part of all is that Miranda Bailey perfectly described who she would become, but her words were directed at someone else. Back in season one, she admits the following to Dr. Burke:

“I think you're cocky, arrogant, bossy, and pushy. You also have a God complex. You never think about anybody but your damn self.”

Focused, active, and outspoken, Bailey became a bitter caricature of herself as she gained and experienced power. Her worst traits, which had already manifested themselves in Mentoring, only became more pronounced. Her best qualities, on the other hand, were no longer noticeable.

Unfortunately, from now on, the chances of Miranda Bailey returning to the self so beloved by her fans are very slim. Most likely she will be stuck in this persona for the rest of the show. However, if you are interested in what awaits Bailey in Grey's Anatomy Season 20, be sure to tune in to ABC on March 14, 2024.
