The Deathly Hallows are cool and all, but have you ever wondered what would happen to a wizard who had a Horcrux if they were Kissed by the Dementor?..

Summary:

  • By creating a Horcrux, a wizard stores part of their soul in a physical object.
  • On the other hand, the Dementor’s Kiss consumes the soul of its victim.
  • The interaction between a Horcrux and a Dementor could create a logical (or magical) soul paradox, but it has never been addressed in the series.

To this day, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter contains countless mysteries and unanswered questions, and it’s largely part of its charm. After all, how could fan fiction writers have written so much about a world that’s thoroughly explored and explained? But some secrets and questions boggle our mind more than others.

It’s a mere coincidence that most of them have to do with Dark magic, we swear.

In Harry Potter, Souls Exist And Act As Objects

That’s an oversimplification, mind you, but it transfers the general idea. In the Wizarding World, the concept of souls is no mere concept: it addresses something that actually exists in all conscious beings and can be artificially manipulated. Souls can be split into pieces, bound, damaged, and contained in physical objects.

There are only four major ways to interact with one’s soul as far as we’re aware. By intentional murder, a wizard can rip their soul apart. By using a special ritual, a wizard can bind their soul to an object. By experiencing true remorse, a wizard can mend their broken soul back together. But that’s all something a wizard can do. The Dementors, too, can interact with the human soul: these creatures consume them.

But what would happen if a Dementor Kissed a wizard who had a Horcrux?

Horcrux Plus Dementor Equals Magical Paradox

Let’s say we have a wizard who split their soul in two parts. One half is in their body, and the other one is stored in a Horcrux somewhere far away. Then, that wizard is attacked by a Dementor, and the latter uses its Kiss on the wizard. In theory, the Dementor should consume the wizard’s soul. But there isn’t a full soul to be consumed!

If the Dementor consumes one half of the wizard’s soul, can they restore it by experiencing remorse and reuniting with the half that’s stored in the Horcrux?

If the wizard is killed while not having a soul, will the Horcrux return them to life, considering there wasn’t a soul left in the body that could linger around?

And if the Dementor can consume pieces of souls rather than full souls, does that mean it can also destroy the Horcrux by giving it the good old Smooch?

There are just two many questions, and we can’t believe that after creating the Dementors, Ekrizdis didn’t experiment with the Horcruxes: seeing that he was one of the Darkest wizards, he was sure to be well-acquainted with Herpo the Foul’s works.
