If you want to hit House of the Dragon fans where it hurts, just bring up the wig issue.

In general, fans love what the House of the Dragon costume department has done with the characters' looks. However, there is one thing that the fandom still can't get over: those wigs.

Don't get them wrong: some wigs, especially those worn by Rhaenyra (both versions of Rhaenyra) and Daemon, are considered perfect by HotD fandom. However, some characters have been less fortunate when it comes to their hairstyles.

For example, fans still have a hard time understanding why Harry Collett, who plays Jacaerys Velaryon and has beautiful naturally brown hair, had to wear... a brown-haired wig for the series. Another major hairstyle disappointment is Rhaenys' wig, which looks far too massive and unnecessarily medieval.

However, there is one wig that is almost unanimously considered the worst in House of the Dragon, and that's whatever Rhaena is wearing.

According to fans, it looks like an adult wig was put on a young girl's head.

"Apparently, hair and makeup thought that being black meant that these characters' hair needed to be BIG. Big to the point of the hair swallowing the actors' heads. Big to the point of looking very heavy and like turning one's head would be a challenge," Redditor bluesilvergold said.

Some fans joke that the wig is the reason Rhaena was not a major part of the first season's storyline.

"I'm convinced that's the reason she (and Baela) barely did anything of note this season: she could barely move because of that monstrosity of a wig," noted Redditor vanillalatte_019.

House of the Dragon is heading into its second season, which is due to start filming in March. Rhaena will most likely be back, and there are hopes that the costume department will do something about the wig that has caused so much controversy in the fandom.
