Is Ron a Secret Divination Master? His Offhand Comments Prove to Be Eerily Accurate
Harry Potter's loopy Professor Trelawney is convinced that she is a master of Divination, but the few times that she makes an accurate prophecy she doesn't remember doing so.
There is another character in the books that makes some eerily accurate predictions without realizing it… so is it possible that there's a second Seer in the Harry Potter books, and he was in front of our noses all along?
A fun fan theory posits that Ronald Weasley, for all of his eye-rolling and sneering at Divination, might have a little bit of the Seer in him. When you stop and think about it, a surprising number of Ron's snarky comments end up coming true!
- In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Ron jokes that perhaps Tom Riddle won his special award for killing Moaning Myrtle. It turns out that he's right – Myrtle was killed when Tom Riddle first released the Basilisk from the Chamber of Secrets.
- In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the Golden Trio takes Divination for the first time. When reading Harry's tea leaves, Ron makes two predictions: first, that his best friend will work for the Ministry of Magic one day (based on the bowler-hat-shaped blob in the leaves) and second, that Harry is in for an unexpected financial windfall. Harry does indeed grow up to work for the Ministry, and one year after Ron's prediction he wins 1000 Galleons in the Triwizard Tournament.
- In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Ron insists that the trio call Voldemort You-Know-Who, in spite of the fact that Harry has refused to do so for years. But for the first time, Ron stands his ground, and because of this, the gang doesn't let the V-word pass through their lips for months at a time. It turns out that this gut feeling from Ron was well-founded: the name has a kind of tracking spell on it, and the moment Voldemort's name is said out loud is the moment they get captured.
There are plenty of smaller hints too – like Ron being the only person skeptical of Gilderoy Lockhart's supposed accomplishments (correct!), or the Divination class prediction that Harry would get stabbed in the back by a friend (Ron abandoning him in Deathly Hallows), or even his joke that he wouldn't put it past Snape to be able to fly like a bat (yup).
Divination is treated like a joke throughout the Harry Potter books, but at the same time, there's no denying that some people really do have the ability to See things that others can't. Maybe Ron's ability to throw shade is hiding a much more impressive skill…
