The viewers, however, still do.

Summary:

  • Fifty Shades of Grey is a movie series based on the series of novels of the same name by E. L. James.
  • The story follows the BDSM relationship between Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, portrayed by Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson.
  • Dornan admits that he wasn't thrilled with the success of the first movie, but he doesn't regret the project at all.

It's no secret that over the years, the title of the Fifty Shades of Grey movie series has become a meme in its own right. Although there were a few fans of the franchise who enjoyed the taboo dynamic between Christian Grey and Anastasia, the majority of viewers still can't take the story seriously.

Of course, the majority of the roasts went to the author of the original story, E. L. James. However, everyone involved in the production fell victim to the heavy criticism of the movie franchise. From questionable ethics to poor acting choices, all three movies were dissected frame by frame.

For the two leads, Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, Fifty Shades has become a ticket to fame and big Hollywood success. Perhaps that is why they cannot really say they regret the experience. However, as both have repeatedly admitted in various interviews, they were well aware of the criticism.

Why Did Jamie Dornan Return To Fifty Shades of Grey

Little did we know that after the release of Fifty Shades of Grey, Jamie Dornan literally moved to a secluded cabin in the country to hide from all the media frenzy the movie was creating. It just so happened that the movie's director, Sam Taylor-Johnson, was kind enough to invite everyone to her place to ride out the storm.

The unexpected mix of bad reviews but extremely high box office numbers came as a surprise to the actor.

While the news was good, he wasn't too excited to step into the same franchise mess again, knowing how the first film was received. But in the end, it was a matter of contractual obligations.

“It [the film] made so much money that two or three were like greenlit overnight. It was a strange thing, because then you are like, there is a bit of ridicule here and I’m now contractually doing two more of them and knowing that there would be more of that damnation to come,” Dornan recalls.

Although the actor is currently involved in much more acclaimed productions, such as Kenneth Branagh's drama film Belfast or the BBC's hit thriller series The Tourist, the memories of 2015 still haunt Dornan.

But he says he has no regrets about taking part in the project. If that's not a sign of true commitment, we don't know what is.

If you want to see some of Jamie Dornan's best work, you can stream The Tourist on Netflix. However, if you're nostalgic for the cringe-fest that was Fifty Shades of Grey, all three films in the franchise are available to rent on all platforms.
