A new version of Sherlock Holmes is always welcome, but why is there no John Watson — and who’s that young lady next to the famous detective?

Summary:

  • The CW announced its upcoming TV show Sherlock & Daughter, introducing a new gimmick to the old story.
  • Harry Potter ’s David Thewlis and The Originals’s Blu Hunt will portray Sherlock Holmes and his daughter Amelia, respectively.
  • Dr. John Watson, Sherlock’s iconic sidekick and personal writer, seems to be out of town for the duration of the series.

The CW announced its new TV show, bringing us yet another iteration of the world’s favorite detective story. This time, however, there’s a twist: Sherlock Holmes will have to finally rely on his family instead of one snarky war veteran. That’s right, the CW’s version of Sherlock will have to make it without his Dr. Watson! The show is called Sherlock & Daughter, so you might be able to figure out his replacement.

Sherlock Holmes Gets A New Young Sidekick

In Sherlock & Daughter, the world-famous detective faces quite a dilemma: he can’t investigate an important case without putting his closest ones’ lives in danger. Enter Amelia, a young American girl who comes to England after her mother’s mysterious murder with many questions and a sneaky suspicion that the famous Mr. Holmes is her father. Despite their differences, the two must work together to unveil the plot.

For the new show, David Thewlis (aka Remus Lupin from Harry Potter) and Blu Hunt (aka Inadu, The Hollow from The Originals) will put on the masks of Sherlock Holmes and Amelia presumably-Holmes, respectively. Meanwhile, Dougray Scott (aka Jacob Kane from Batwoman) will become the new James Moriarty.

It seems like there won’t be a single Dr. Watson in the CW’s version of the iconic detective’s story; perhaps, the good doctor will have a few honorable mentions.

Sherlock & Daughter Plays With A Gimmick

In the past few decades, every new iteration of Sherlock Holmes needed an interesting gimmick to stand out from the rest. BBC and CBS took the action into modern days and adjusted their Watsons while they were at it; the CW is taking it one step further and removing the detective’s famous friend completely.

It won’t be the first attempt to play around with Sherlock Holmes’s family or use one of his relatives as his dynamic partner, so this gimmick won’t bring as much novelty to the table as it could have. Everything will come down to the execution, but if there’s one man we believe in, it’s Remus Lupi– Sorry, David Thewlis.
