The Wizarding World is very authentic and kind of stuck in the past — for most of the time, in a good way. There is, however, one "but".

Over the years, Harry Potter fans have found a lot of little inconsistencies in the Wizarding World and how it co-exists with the ordinary Muggle world. According to canon, wizards are not stuck in the past, but they are also not particularly keen on implementing modern technology into their lives.

Despite having their own rock bands (which clearly requires things like electric guitars), wizards still use quills for writing instead of ball pens, even though the latter is not particularly a cutting-edge piece of tech.

While some fans are surprised by the inconsistency, others are quick to break down all the advantages of using old school stuff for writing.

"Their enchanted quills are better than pens. Self-inking, auto-dictating, spell-checking, etc. And quill pens are still used by calligraphers because they provide a sharper stroke and more flexibility than a plastic/steel pen," Redditor fullstack_mcguffin explained.

In fact, fans believe, if muggles had magic of their own, we might have never even invented ball pens in the first place, simply using spells to deal with the problems that a quill might cause.

Still, pretty much nothing would prevent a wizard from enchanting a ball pen. But there is another issue: production. We muggles have time and energy for things like plastic manufacturing and pen factories, but magic allows wizards to simply resort to quills and not care.

...or maybe just enchant an entire factory and leave quills in the past where they belong. Seriously, no more ink stains on the wizarding mantles — and we're pretty sure normal spells work perfectly with ball pens or even computer keyboards.
