Let’s be real, they both deserve no kindness.

Summary:

  • The Handmaid’s Tale is a TV show that focuses on a dystopian future, where women are stripped of their rights.
  • Serena Joy was behind the ideas of Gilead’s regime and enforced the inhumane laws.
  • However, she was made to become the victim of those rules herself after the death of her husband.

The Handmaid's Tale is a dystopian story, which automatically makes the setting frightening to the audience. The future, where the ecological situation is pushing humanity to its worst just to ensure its survival, is terrifying and hard to imagine, yet hits close to home.

The modern sets of supermarkets and the United States being the base for the most horrible totalitarian regime with the safety only available in neighboring Canada is an image that for some reason is very believable as a future in 2023.

Perhaps this is what makes The Handmaid's Tale so popular. Even if the last few seasons haven't been met with the same initial excitement, audiences still can't stop watching the show, no matter what twist it takes, without seeing a finale.

Until Season 6 of The Handmaid's Tale ends, there is not much for the fandom to do but ponder the fate that the show's main characters deserve. While the wish for a happy ending for the main protagonist isn't too controversial, opinions about the show's main antagonist are divided.

Some people feel that Serena deserves the worst treatment she can get from the show. Others feel that she has already seen the worst of Mrs. Wheeler.

Mrs. Wheeler And Serena Joy

Although the show didn't do a very good job of showing a transition in Mrs. Wheeler's behavior toward Serena, the idea was there. From becoming something of a saint in the eyes of Gilead, Serena made the wrong choice of not continuing to live a lifestyle that she herself had instilled in Gilead.

She made a choice that she truly believed in, but it caused Alanis' ideas about Serena to completely turn and change. Mrs. Wheeler no longer saw her in that respectable light, but rather saw an opportunity to make her her own Handmaid and get her child as a prize.

One could argue that it was all a punishment that Serena brought upon herself, not once, but twice. From making Gilead the way it is to not playing by her own rules, Serena got a taste of Mrs. Wheeler's own medicine. And that is true. What makes Mrs. Wheeler even more cruel is her attitude toward Noah.

While Serena truly wanted a child and treated Offred's daughter as her own, caring for her and giving her all the affection she could, Mrs. Wheeler seemed to take pleasure in torturing both Serena and her son. This draws a line between the two and makes Alanis much less human in the eyes of the majority.
