That’s a truly unbreakable bond.

Although the relationships between Supernatural ’s John Winchester and his sons, Dean and Sam, were always far from perfect, and he was quickly deemed as the failed parent by the fandom, the actors never felt anything but mutual love and respect for each other.

In fact, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who portrayed John on the show, is only 12 years oldes than his eldest on-screen son, so there was always a connection that became a solid base for true friendship. That friendship was confirmed not only by the words of admiration from all of the actors to each other, but with something more… permanent.

While attending Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s wedding with Hilarie Burton, both Jensen Ackles, who portrayed Dean, and Jared Padalecki noticed a tattoo artist. As uncommon as that is, the artist was doing tattoos for the wedding guests right at the reception, so anyone could join in and choose the one they like.

As the evening went on, it turned out both the groom and his elder on-screen son were eyeing one particular image, so it was just inevitable for them to end up with it. Jensen Ackles recalled the events of that wedding night at a Supernatural fan convention in Toronto back in 2019.

“I was standing there and Jeff comes up, he's like, 'Dude, are you going to get one?' I was like, 'I don't know, maybe, the crown 's kind of cool.' I didn't know it was a Basquiat crown. I was thinking like, 'Oh I was king of Mardi Gras this year, maybe I'll get the crown. [Jeff's] like, 'I'm gonna get that crown.' I was like, 'Oh, no way, that was actually the one I was looking at,” he said.

Jared Padaleki was the last one to join, but he also was very enthusiastic about the idea of them having matching tattoos. According to Ackles, the trio was calling themselves “The Three Kings” ever since, however, the crowns actually hold a deeper meaning as they symbolize W for Winchesters.

Maybe it wasn’t the most conventional time and place to get the tattoos like that, but this story just goes to show how deeply The CW’s hit impacted the lives of not only fans, but the cast behind it as well.

If you’re feeling nostalgic and want to see Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padaleki in action as Winchesters trio once again, you can go ahead and stream Supernatural from season 1 on Netflix or Max.
