Many Great Houses of Westeros lost it all or even went extinct throughout Game of Thrones, but one powerful lord stayed out of trouble and only grew stronger.

Summary:

  • By the finale of Game of Thrones, countless original Great and small Houses were destroyed and gone for good.
  • House Arryn, the dynasty of the man who set the many wars in motion, remained unscathed by the chaos.
  • The young Lord Robin Arryn was left with the only prosperous and safe land by the finale, with both the local monarchs being his cousins.

By the notorious Game of Thrones finale, few OGs remained around. The Tyrells, the Targaryens, the Martells, the Bolton, the Freys, and many others essentially went extinct and lost everything. The Lannisters, the Baratheons, and the Starks lost almost all their heirs save for the most unlikely ones. Many Great and small Houses fell to never rise again, with new dynasties coming to take their places.

But one unlikely Great House managed to sit out all the danger, and its lord didn’t lose anything; in fact, he gained much more than he had at the start of the story.

House Arryn Started the Chaos in Westeros

If we pretend to ignore Petyr Baelish’s active participation in these events for a second, it was Jon Arryn, Robert Baratheon’s Hand of the King, who started the entire ordeal that led to the War of the Five Kings. Jon Arryn recognized the truth about the Lannister twins and King Robert’s heirs’ illegitimate legacy and sent the fateful raven to secure this information in case of his untimely death.

Thanks to Jon Arryn’s information, Ned Stark began investigating the truth and informed other powerful lords and ladies about it. After that, the Seven Kingdoms plunged into chaos and war for years to come; but peculiarly enough, House Arryn stayed out of trouble throughout the majority of those events after Lord Jon’s death.

Jon Arryn’s son Robin, of all the high lords, won the most from the countless wars that were tearing Westeros apart for years. His land, the Vale, never suffered from battles and plagues, and he didn’t lose his men or money fighting on either side of the numerous conflicts that took place in the Seven Kingdoms. He just stayed away.

With his mother Lysa’s death, Lord Robin finally became his own man. The powerful lord of the only prosperous land in Westeros by the end of the war and the cousin of both the Northern and the Southern monarchs, the young Arryn had his position secured for decades to come. He would later marry a noble lade, perhaps even expanding his influence to the Trident by marriage, and live happily ever after.

The one and only trouble the Vale had by the finale of Game of Thrones were the mountain tribes, but that was nothing new. For Lord Robin Arryn, the devastating years that doomed so many Great Houses and lands, were nothing but peaceful.
