With Henry Cavill soon to be replaced by Liam Hemsworth, some fans of the series are eyeing a completely different actor to play Geralt.

Summary:

  • Despite the initial skepticism, Henry Cavill managed to win over the hearts of fans of The Witcher series almost instantly
  • With the actor's departure from the show, many viewers expressed their utter disappointment
  • Although he will eventually be replaced by Liam Hemsworth, some fans would have preferred a completely different actor instead

Netflix 's The Witcher TV series can be justifiably criticized for many things, but the casting choice for the titular monster hunter definitely wasn't one of them.

When it was first announced that Henry Cavill would be playing the role of Geralt of Rivia, many fans were skeptical of the choice, but once the show premiered, the actor's performance immediately put their concerns to rest.

In light of this, the news of Cavill's departure from the series after season 3 was met with absolute shock by the fanbase, with many viewers claiming that they had now officially lost the last reason to watch the flawed show.

Liam Hemsworth Will Have A Tough Time Winning Over Fans

Although Liam Hemsworth, who will play the character from now on, will undoubtedly do everything he can with his performance, it is highly unlikely that he will be able to replace Cavill, whose take on Geralt viewers came to know and love over the course of three seasons.

Some fans also believe that he might not be a good choice to play the character (even though they initially had the exact same reaction to Cavill) and have come up with their own ideas of who could potentially play the White Wolf.

One of the most popular choices, surprisingly overlooked by the show's creators, is Mads Mikkelsen, who you are probably familiar with thanks to the amazing amount of memorable characters the actor has portrayed over the years.

A nice piece of fan art created by artist Wonki Cho gives us a glimpse of what Geralt would have looked like had he been portrayed by Mikkelsen, and the result is quite stunning, leaving fans to lament the missed opportunity.

Mads Mikkelsen Is A Perfect Choice To Play Geralt

Frankly, it is hard to imagine a better candidate to replace Cavill, as Mikkelsen has already proven the range of his acting talent time and time again, portraying very different characters over the course of his prolific career.

The actor has portrayed stoic characters in the past, just look at him in 2009's Valhalla Rising, and also bears a striking resemblance to the older version of Geralt we saw in 2015's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt video game.

He also has experience taking over characters previously portrayed by other actors, having replaced Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts franchise, with some fans even preferring his take on the wizard to Depp's.

Of course, the sad truth that still needs to be pointed out is that the chance of getting such a great actor to play Geralt was almost non-existent to begin with for the simple reason that it is unlikely that the show's creators could afford to cast him for multiple seasons.

In addition, some fans point out that given the questionable quality of the series, Mikkelsen's immense acting talent would have been shamelessly wasted and would not have saved the project from its seemingly inevitable demise.

Either way, Liam Hemsworth deserves a chance to try and appeal to the show's audience, who will be able to check out the actor's performance as soon as season 4 is released.

No specific dates have been revealed yet, but with the earliest stages of production for the season scheduled for January 2024, it is expected sometime in 2025.
