Rings of Power Season 2 Falls Into the Same Trap Game of Thrones Season 8 Did
Bigger, better, more ambitious – but there's one tiny detail The Rings of Power writers' might have all but forgotten about.
Amazon Studios has revealed exciting new information about the highly anticipated second season of The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power, based on J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved books. In the season finale of the first season, Galadriel (played by Morfydd Clarke) finally uncovers Halbrand (Charlie Vickers) as the Sauron she has been searching for all these years. After being exposed, the sorcerer flees to Mordor, where he is sure to gather an army of orcs to fight against the elves. Galadriel, aided by the powerful Rings of Power, will do everything in her power to stop the villain from taking over Middle-earth.
In an interview with Deadline, Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon Studios, promised fans that they can expect even more epic battles in the second season. He also assured viewers that the new season will be more action-packed and dynamic than the first. These statements will surely be welcomed by those who felt that the first season was a bit slow-paced.
However, considering how the writers handled The Rings of Power season 1, there's something to be said about epic battles we apparently are going to be treated to in season 2.
Some fans worry that it'll be just that – epic battles for the sake of visual epicness without much thought or motivation behind them.
Basically, right now The Rings of Power season 2 is at risk of falling into the same trap Game of Thrones ' now-infamous season 8 did. Notorious brainchild of David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, season 8 of the hit HBO show was extremely disappointing, despite all the visual epicness of it – because there was little explanation behind all the rapid changes in characters' motivation and decisions they made (yes, Daenerys, we're looking at you.)
Season 8 was widely criticized for its lack of character development and seemingly rushed plot points, and The Rings of Power season 2 promised action-packedness might actually be a repetition of the very same mistake.
It's not enough to just throw in an epic battle or two, or dozen; there's got to be something to explain the conflict behind it, set up all the high stakes, make us care about the outcome of said battle. Will The Rings of Power writers be able to deliver just that in season 2?
The second season of The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power will consist of eight episodes, with a total of five seasons planned by the creators. The series will continue to delve into the events of the Second Age of Middle-earth, including the creation of all 20 Rings of Power. Currently, the filming for this season is still in progress, with a projected premiere date in 2024.
