Russell Crow’s Divisive Horror Now Available on Netflix (But Not Everywhere)
Not everyone got the opportunity to see who was right after all.
Fans of supernatural horror movies might want to consider this week their lucky one since such a flick landed on Netflix a couple of days ago — though there’s no need for them to rush to the streaming unless they’re in the UK or Ireland.
To many users’ disappointment, Netflix has been practicing such a trick for quite a long time — this time The Pope’s Exorcist with Russell Crow in the leading role fell victim to the streaming’s unfair division system.
Anyway, the movie is now there for users with UK or Ireland-based Netflix subscription — and they’ll probably get to decide whether the film was panned for all the wrong reasons or deserved what it got.
The Pope’s Exorcist Stars Russell Crow in a Pretty Unorthodox Role
The movie is based on two books written by Father Gabriel Amorth and follows the latter’s cinematic self, portrayed by Crow, who embarks on his own investigation and dives deeper into a young boy’s possession which will eventually lead Amorth to uncovering the Vatican's centuries-old darkest secrets.
Released back in 2023, The Pope’s Exorcist was met with mostly negative reviews from critics who later on secured the movie a controversial score of 50% on Rotten Tomatoes.
However, not everything was that bad for the movie which still got viewers’ love and respect — The Pope’s Exorcist earned whopping $77 million with the initial budget of $18 million, also garnering the audience’s favorable reviews that brought the movie 80% of the viewers’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Pope’s Exorcist Will Soon Be Getting a Sequel
Critics may pan the movie all they want, but the fact of it getting a sequel speaks for itself. Despite its bad reputation among the industry’s darlings, the movie secured itself a bright future after the viewers’ raving reaction.
Little information is available about the upcoming sequel since it was only confirmed last year. But the potential premise is already quite promising — The Pope’s Exorcist ends on a high note, proving that Amorth has a lot of other evil mysteries to unveil.
