You can only notice it if you know Chinese.

The fourth episode of Season 2 of Severance, which was released last week, was perhaps the most intense and powerful one after the incomparable finale of the first season.

For the first time, the employees of MDR found themselves outside the office walls on the company's initiative, learned about Kier Esgan's creepy twin brother, and uncovered Helena's secret.

One of the most exciting sequences was that steamy scene between Mark and "Helly," and it also gave rise to the already popular theory that Helena is now pregnant after one night together with Mark.

Kids and Pregnancy Have Been Recurring Topics in Both Seasons

The motif with children is found in the beginning of the second season of Severance, and more than once – first the viewers see Mark on a bed surrounded by babies in office suits, and at the end a baby with the head of Kier Eagan is crawling at his feet.

The first season also addressed the issue of pregnancy. In addition to Gabby Arteta, who underwent the severance procedure to give birth, viewers witnessed Mark's conversation with his sister's midwife, Alexa, where he admitted that he and Gemma could not have kids.

This Hidden Detail Suggests That the Pregnancy Storyline May Be True

If all these clues are more or less straight-forward, then one of the trailers for the second season of Severance hides another much less obvious detail.

Reddit user MattsIdeaShop noticed that in one of the shots, Mark is leaving a Chinese restaurant and we see Helena in the background – their conversation clearly caused negative emotions in Mark.

Then we see the outside of the restaurant with a sign that says ZUFU. At the same time, the letters ZU are turned off so that the bright glowing letters FU stand out in the dark.

In Chinese, there is a pictogram that is read as Fu and looks like this – 父. At the same time, Zufu is the word 祖父, which means grandfather.

Considering that in Severance, even the smallest detail has a meaning, it is easy to conclude that this sign above the restaurant is not just a coincidence.

Most Fans Hope That This Theory Will Not Be Confirmed

So far, Severance has received nothing but praise from fans, but if the pregnancy theory turns out to be true, it could be the reason for the first major criticism.

Viewers feel that the pregnancy storyline would take too much time away from the many mysteries the writers already have to solve. Also, the pregnancy trope after just one night seems lazy and soap-opera-like to many.

Reddit user ughwhateverokaysure wrote:

“I trust the show but it's just weird how the one sex scene on the show leads to a baby and if that's the case, I think it's a fair critique to call it lazy (even if they explain it away later).”

Severance has never let its viewers down, so we can only trust the writers, Dan Erickson and Ben Stiller, and wait for the next episode.
