The ghost of Game of Thrones still haunts Benioff and Weiss, it seems.

Summary:

  • Game of Thrones creators Benioff and Weiss just released their new hard sci-fi TV show 3 Body Problem.
  • Critics are largely unimpressed with the first season, praising its minor aspects but pointing out flaws in major ones.
  • Viewers are seemingly not too impressed either as 3 Body Problem currently has a 44% Audience Score on RT.

While they didn’t exactly end it on the best note, Benioff and Weiss received a tremendous recognition boost thanks to their work on Game of Thrones. After the finale of the famous HBO show, D&D switched sides and joined Netflix to work on their new series 3 Body Problem that just premiered. The hard hard sci-fi piqued viewers’ attention long ago, but was it worth the years and millions invested?

3 Body Problem Received Ambiguous Reviews

It seems like the ghost of the Game of Thrones finale is still haunting Benioff and Weiss after all these years. 3 Body Problem Season 1 received largely ambiguous reviews from critics who praise its minor aspects but call the show out on failing in the more crucial departments.

“The alien threat feels underdeveloped. <...> 3 Body Problem certainly tries to convince you that generations down the line will feel the impact of this arrival, even drawing a clumsy comparison to climate change. Yet it all feels strangely flat, stuck in two dimensions even as the series waxes poetic about the infinite dimensions the universe could contain,” Mashable’s Belen Edwards wrote.

Many other critics and reporters call 3 Body Problem out on being largely flat and decorative, with not terrible, but ultimately unimpressive performances and unconvincing selling points.

What’s 3 Body Problem’s Current Rating?

On the movie platforms, the new TV show’s rating matches the critics’ description: it’s not exactly horrendous, but… It’s nothing to brag about, most definitely. On Rotten Tomatoes, 3 Body Problem’s Audience Score is sitting at an underwhelming 44% at the time of writing, while critics were more generous with a 75% score.

At the same time, IMDb is more subtle as on that platform, the show’s 6.4 rating enforces its arguable mediocrity. It’s too early to give the final judgment as a large chunk of the audience and critics is still yet to give this series a try, but one thing is certain: so far, it doesn’t seem like Netflix’s $20M per episode investment is paying off.
