As we've covered before, some Star Wars characters have long outstayed their welcome. And the prime example of that currently is not the original trilogy characters, but Ahsoka Tano.

Ahsoka was created for The Clone Wars CG series, and it was pretty obvious that she was never supposed to survive the end of that series.

She was Anakin Skywalker's sudden apprentice, whose existence was never even hinted at in the primary canon of the movies, so it was clear from the start that the supposed main point of her existence was adding more tragedy and disappointment to Anakin's life between Episodes II and III.

By herself she was not a very good character, the sort of generic tomboy action heroine whose character traits besides appearance and abilities you struggle to remember.

But she also happened to be the favorite character of Dave Filoni, who directed the series. So as the sale of Star Wars to Disney approached and George Lucas' personal interest in The Clone Wars series waned, Ahsoka's character non-arc ended up going off the rails.

First, she got framed for a crime (after doing every stupid thing that could make framing her easier), and though her name was eventually cleared, she left the Jedi Order pretty much because the Order refused to confront the rest of the Republic for her sake and parted ways with Anakin. Thus her absence in Episode III was explained, and she was given an opportunity to survive Order 66.

Then, in an extra season made after the Disney sale she got caught in Order 66 anyway, but still managed to survive.

Then she made her re-appearance in Season 2 of Rebels, and got another perfect, thematically appropriate chance to die saving the main cast from Darth Vader… but survived once again, and in a potentially setting-breaking way, to boot.

And now, in addition to more cameo appearances (such as in The Mandalorian ), she's getting her own live-action show.

Many of the fans, however, are less than amused with her track record of survival, and believe that she should have died long time ago and stay dead. But given the current importance of Dave Filoni in Lucasfilm, this is not very likely to happen in the foreseeable future.
