When both Stephen King and Stephen Spielberg get mentioned in the same breath, you know you're in for something special. A movie night that 100% won't disappoint.

Stephen Spielberg (especially early-Spielberg) has something so magical that a lot of today's filmmakers try to recreate. However, that perfect harmony between wonder and terror is rarer and rarer these days.

Many directors don't even dream of being recognized for achieving that special Spielberg juice, that incredible ability to make us grip our seats. Most have stumbled, some have failed entirely, but every once in a while, someone gets it just right.

And the one I'm going to talk about today is the latter. Julius Avery, a director who dared to dream big, was praised by none-other than Stephen King, the master of horror himself. And there were no empty words. King is sure that this movie has every right to stand in line with early-Spielberg works.

Overlord (2018): Horrifying Nazi Experiments

If you think you know your World War II movies, think again. Overlord is here to take its deserved place as one of the most disturbing and shocking World War II films ever.

A squad of American paratroopers is about to drop behind enemy lines. Their mission is quite straightforward–take out a Nazi radio tower in an occupied French village.

However, their operation quickly spirals into something straight out of your darkest nightmares. Our heroes discover that beneath the church where the radio tower stands, there's an undercover lab. We're talking mad scientist territory here. The Nazis are experimenting with a mysterious serum that turns ordinary people into terrifying creatures.

And as someone who's watched my fair share of both war films and horrors, I can't even begin to describe how locked in I was the entire runtime.

Overlord Got That Stephen King's Seal of Approval

I wasn't the only one who was impressed by the movie. None other than Stephen King gave his highest praise, tweeting:

Coming from the man who's probably seen every horror film ever made (and written half of them), that comment is the equivalent of a coronation.

The audience seems to agree. As Redditor AlienMimicry wrote:

“I was pleasantly surprised by this film. Overlord is very acutely aware of what it is and never tries to take itself too seriously. It's a super fun and crazy ride from the moment the supernatural plot kicks in.”

So if you're searching to experience this wild action yourself, Overlord is available on Sky Store, Amazon Video and Apple TV+.
