He’s the one to direct, so why not starring in it anyway?

Taylor Sheridan has brought Paramount+ to its spotlight in recent years, dropping a bunch of extremely successful shows on the streaming’s platform and leaving the audiences on the hook with the finale of every single one of them.

However, some who joined Sheridan’s fandom only a while ago might not know that the writer-director kicked his career off with major TV roles of his own.

In fact, he isn’t a stranger to posing in front of the camera even now and conveniently got himself cameo roles in his own TV shows. It’s very likely that you didn’t realise this was Sheridan during the first watch, so now you’ll probably consider a second one.

A Cowboy in Hell or High Water

Though it’s by far Sheridan’s smallest role ever, he was a perfect candidate to land it. In his second feature movie Hell or High Water, Sheridan portrays an unnamed cowboy who encounters Texas Rangers Marcus and Alberto while trying to move his herd away from a blazing fire that started at a highway nearby.

Sheridan’s appearance on the screen lasts around 1 minute, yet he manages to deliver the entire movie’s crucial lines as the cowboy complains about the people of his kind still having to face the same issues that cowboys were trying to resolve centuries ago.

The cameo role was a perfect fit for Sheridan who also owns a ranch in real life and isn’t a stranger to all the difficulties that people like him in the West have to deal with.

Charles Goodnight In 1883

Cowboy vibe in Hell or High Water was probably not enough for Sheridan, so he got himself a similar role in Yellowstone ’s spinoff show 1883, though this time reaching a new level of authenticity.

The series’ couple of episodes featured Charles Goodnight, a rancher who helps Shea and Thomas escape from a gang of bandits; Sheridan is almost unrecognisable in there, wearing a massive beard which also adds some pure Western-y atmosphere to the character’s image.

Additionally, Charles Goodnight was in fact a real person mostly known for inventing the chuckwagon that later on would become an indispensable tool during Westward Expansion.

Cody Spears in Lioness

In his spy thriller that stars Zoe Saldaña, Sheridan left no more space for cowboys, but still showed up on the screen in a very different role.

In Lioness, the writer-director had a brief appearance as Cody Spears, a mercenary who teamed up with Saldaña’s Joe several times, also giving her a couple of pieces of advice as a more experienced Special Agent.

Lioness offered a very unexpected, yet satisfying perspective of Sheridan as an actor whose talent is versatile enough to finally stay away from long cowboy-ish conversations, bringing in some action-packed shooting scenes with Sheridan’s character in their core.

Travis Wheatley In Yellowstone

A side character, yet still a frequent guest in the show’s storyline, Travis Wheatley is probably the most important role Taylor Sheridan has had in his own series, not because in this case he just had more screen time.

Throughout Yellowstone’s 5 seasons, Sheridan established a strong connection between Travis Wheatley and the Dutton family, making it clear that, despite not showing up on the screen that much, his character was still an essential figure in the entire storyline.

Considering how enthusiastic Sheridan is about his most successful show’s spinoffs, it’s very likely that Travis will get his own series after all. Naturally, the director has no problem filming his new projects on his own land, so things are looking good for Travis, even though there’s no official confirmation to wait for so far.
