Amazon Prime is getting ready to launch the third season of its hit series, and Homelander may not be its biggest villain after all.

Warning! Major spoilers ahead!

The adult take on superheroes appealed to viewers, and the excellent source material in the form of comic books by Garth Ennis and Darrick Robertson secured 'The Boys ' place as one of TV's most well-written series. In the third installment, Billy Butcher (Karl Urban ) and his crew will finally gain superpowers to fight the murderous Homelander (Anthony Starr), but it looks like the cold-blooded supe will not be the main villain of the series after all.

The original comics ended on a very unexpected note – Billy Butcher hunting down and killing his former colleagues in an attempt to silence anyone who knew of his villainous plans. And the season three trailer confirms that the series will follow a similar path, with all of Butcher's teammates voicing their concerns about his ruthless actions and his decision to kill all supes, overlooking the fact that some of them are decent people.

When Butcher himself acquires superpowers, the series creators pose an interesting moral dilemma for him, forcing Urban's hero to finally realize who he really is – a villain.

Of course, Amazon Prime's creative team may approach the future of a beloved character differently, but Ennis' original idea certainly sounds like a great way to end 'The Boys'.

'The Boys' season 3 will arrive on Amazon Prime on June 3, 2022.
