Can The Boys keep up with the stakes raised in Season 3, or will the show fall into the trap as so many have before?

In The Boys universe, Homelander stands out as the ultimate formidable force among the superpowered villains. Unlike other antagonists, he not only possesses an impressive array of abilities but is also widely loved by the public, which makes him a powerful figure both physically and socially.

Public opinion was the only aspect that seemed to hold Homelander back throughout the series. Up until the Season 3 finale, Homelander had to hide his dark side from people and turn to cover-ups and conspiracies that could conceal his nefarious actions.

Exposing the ugly truth about Homelander, like the footage of the plane crash, always seemed a way to cause the public to turn against the Supe and at least beat him in this field. However, it all changed in the very last scene of the Season 3 finale, during which Homelander eliminated his Achilles heel and became truly invincible.

In the scene, Homelander brings his Supe son to a rally, and a disgruntled attendee throws a beer can at the boy. Homelander responds by brutally murdering the attacker with a blast from his eyes. The crowd, initially shocked by the violence, quickly starts to cheer and celebrate Homelander's actions.

Though this single moment shocked and excited many fans, it put the entire series at a disadvantage. The crowd celebrating Homelander's brutality means a newfound sense of freedom for the antagonist. Now, there's no way for the Boys or Vaught to manipulate Homelander increasingly consumed by his own ego and desire for control.

This is a dangerous path to follow for any show. Now the stakes are so high that The Boys Season 4 might just not be able to keep up with them. Too many times before have we seen this happen with other shows. Raising stakes in one season just to ignore those highly charged moments in the next is how it usually goes, unfortunately.

Beating Homelander was a difficult mission before, but now it became impossible. It is a classic example of a character becoming so powerful that the creators don't know what to do with them. As a result, the show will need to either lower the stakes and ignore the epic scene that made Homelander invincible or come up with something truly genius. Let's hope for the latter.
