The Immortal Man: Release Date, Plot & Everything We Know About the Peaky Blinders Movie
We won't be getting a seventh season of Peaky Blinders, but we're in for something even more exciting – Thomas Shelby, played by Cillian Murphy, will be returning to the big screen.
Peaky Blinders has successfully spanned six seasons on TV screens, but the story of the rise of the Shelby family is far from over. Over the years, the gangsters have outgrown the confines of the series and are now aiming for a feature-length movie format.
We tell you what is currently known about the upcoming movie titled The Immortal Man and what it may be about.
What Will The Immortal Man Be About?
War has been a central topic in the Shelby family's history, and it will be front and center in the movie. As the world changed with the threat of World War II, the shadow of the coming conflict was already felt in the series.
It was symbolized by the antagonist Oswald Mosley, leader of the British Union of Fascists, who went different paths with the Labour Shelbys in the fifth season. The film's screenwriter Steven Knight said:
“I'm genuinely thrilled that this movie is about to happen. It will be an explosive chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. No holds barred. Full-on Peaky Blinders at war.”
Birmingham also had its own local war, a trade war, between drug and alcohol suppliers. The name of Al Capone, the legendary gangster, will play a significant role in what happens, as the key event in Season 6 was the repeal of Prohibition.
As for the plot, Steven Knight and Netflix are guarding this information and not allowing any leaks. Season 6 approached a historical turning point in 1938, and the viewers saw Shelby leaving the family.
The movie will likely answer the question of how the Mafia family survived the outbreak of war without their leader, and if they did.
The Immortal Man Production Progress & Release Date
For two years, mentions of an upcoming Peaky Blinders movie have gradually morphed into something vague and unlikely.
In the second half of 2024, however, production on the project suddenly moved forward. Steven Knight completed the script and director Tom Harper began shooting in the fall.
The Immortal Man doesn't have a release date yet, but the movie is expected to premiere in 2026 and it will also get a theatrical release.
Will There Be Other Projects in the Peaky Blinders Universe?
Peaky Blinders is a show with huge potential and a rich world. Steven Knight is not ready to say goodbye to this universe.
“After that, according to how the film structure falls into place, we'll set in motion some spin-offs that will be part of the same universe,” he told EW.
According to Bloomberg, at least two spin-offs are in development. One will focus on the early life of Polly Gray, the matriarch of the Irish clan, played by Helen McCrory until her death in 2021.
The events of the second project will take place in 20th century Boston. Which of the characters will ultimately get their own show is an open question and will likely depend on the results of The Immortal Man.
