The trailer for Season 3 of the successful sports comedy-drama Ted Lasso had just dropped.

You can now watch it on YouTube. But did you notice the song to which the trailer is set? It is I Still Believe by Frank Turner (you can its full version here).

And besides the obvious parallels between the song’s text and the series’ contents, there is a hidden meaning in this choice of a song.

First of all, Frank Turner is said to be a big fan of the Ted Lasso series. And second, his own life story parallels event of that series to an extent.

Ted Lasso is a story of the titular American college football coach, played by Jason Sudeikis, who gets recruited to coach a fictional – and struggling – English Premier League soccer team, AFC Richmond, even though he has no experience coaching soccer whatsoever.

Why? Because the club’s owner is intentionally sabotaging the team’s chances for personal reasons and seeks to hire the most incompetent coach possible. Not only Ted is being set up to fail, he’s also plagued by personal troubles – he takes this outlandish job in part because his wife is increasingly blatantly seeking to kick him out of the family.

The Friends' Alternate Ending is So Bleak, It Can Trigger an Actual Depression

But despite being ridiculed for his naivety, Ted Lasso manages to beat the odds with sheer optimism, perseverance and charm. By Season 3 he’s poised to lead his team to success.

This certainly has some resemblances with Frank Turner’s life story. Like Ted Lasso, Frank had his share of misfortunes, even if his were self-inflicted to a much greater degree.

He managed to overcome many creative and personal difficulties during his career, including cocaine addiction and troubles with his mental health, such as anxiety attacks. But as you can see from the song above, Frank managed to keep his optimism, and use his calling of music to eventually salvage himself.

And similarly Ted at one point of the show left with little more than his work and his optimistic outlook, to salvage what remains of his life.

So, I Still Believe was probably picked for the trailer for several reasons.
