The 90s are known for lots of direct-to-video movies, and some of them went a little bit under the radar because they didn't get the hype that the theatrical release could've given them.

That's the case with the majority of the movies in this list of underrated thrillers: you just didn't have the chance to know about them.

Much like the 80s, the 90s became a decade that changed the game, broadened the definition of the thriller genre, and introduced new and unique ways to make the viewer's blood chill and curdle.

This decade also is known for the wider expansion of non-Hollywood movies on the international market, and trust us: Japanese and Spanish horror stories just simply hit differently. But what feels special about this list is that it features the early works of the directors who rose to prominence years later, and their signature way of weaving stories and plotlines together is already distinct in these first movies.

We're talking about Guillermo del Toro and David Cronenberg here: their works from the 90s truly capture their essence in its rawest form. Experiencing all that while knowing their more popular and recent movies feels like meeting an old friend.
