Too bad no one has given her a chance.

Summary:

  • Grey's Anatomy is an ABC procedural medical drama that has been on the air for 19 seasons.
  • Doctor Sydney Heron was a recurring character on the show during seasons 2, 3, and 4, but then stopped appearing.
  • Many fans feel that Arizona Robbins, who was introduced in season 5, was another attempt at the same character type.

When the show goes on for as long as Grey’s Anatomy does, it’s not surprising to see many characters come and go, as if they were never intended to stay.

First of all, it makes the viewer’s experience fresh, as no one gets tired of seeing the very same faces over and over again. But also it gives the writers the opportunity to find out what they are doing wrong and fix it for future episodes.

Grey’s Anatomy’s writers’ room in particular, however, faced this challenge early on. With Kali Rocha’s character Sydney Heron, who joined the cast in season 2 and appeared last in season 4, they have made a few fundamental mistakes that prevented the audience from falling in love with her.

The same archetype of an overly positive character was later used for one of the audience's all-time favorite characters, Arizona Robbins. Both women were sweet and funny, joked around, and acted friendly when the friendliness was called for.

However, only one of them went on a date with Derek Shepherd, making many Merder fans extremely unhappy from the start. On top of that, her happiness and cheerfulness were maxed out to the point where the character slowly but surely became a caricature of her former self.

Just like in real life, not many of us tend to trust overly positive people who force a smile and try to be friends with everyone and everything they meet. Many viewers felt the same way about Sydney, even though she had the potential to become just as beloved as Arizona just a few years later.

Arizona Robbins' attitude was more in line with her specialty, as she appeared as an attending pediatric surgeon. More importantly, she was developed beyond the shell of a character much quicker than Sydney, leading fans to believe that the writers learned from their own mistakes and decided to give the same type a second try.

Of course, it was an unfair and sad situation for all of Sydney Heron's fans. While there weren't many people rooting for her, not everyone was ready to give up on the ever-happy Doctor Heron.

However, her fate was decided for the audience, and all the new storylines that seasons 4 and 5 brought have definitely made the goodbye easier.

If you want to relive the classic seasons of Grey's Anatomy, you can stream the show on Netflix or Hulu.
