Could this be the flop of the year?

Summary:

  • My Man Is Cupid is a K-drama that premiered on Amazon Prime on December 1.
  • The series focuses on Cheon Sang Hyuk, a 500-year-old cupid, and Baek Ryun, a veterinarian who has bad luck in dating.
  • Despite starring popular Korean idol Nana, the show has received mixed reviews based on the first two episodes.

There is nothing better than a good new K-drama to speed up the days before the holidays. This is especially true for a drama with such a romantic premise as My Man Is Cupid Had. The new Amazon Prime release promised everything you'd want from a romantic drama and more, especially if you know the stars of the show.

Both Jang Dong-yoon, who portrays Cheon Sang Hyuk, and Nana, who took over the role of Baek Ryun, are well-established in the Korean entertainment industry. While Jang Dong-yoon made his breakthrough in 2017 by starring in another TV series, School 2017, Nana has been climbing the career ladder since 2009.

My Man Is Cupid premiered its first two episodes on Amazon Prime on December 1, celebrating the beginning of winter. However, judging by the fan response, the show has a chance to be the biggest flop of the year if it continues in the same direction and at the same pace.

What Is Wrong With My Man Is Cupid

Those redditors on r/KDRAMA who have an Amazon Prime subscription were quick to react to the release of the new show. Unfortunately, the reaction was very misguided, as many people felt that the show would do much better with a whole new set of characters than the ones they were given.

Despite the good acting and a somewhat interesting premise, the show doesn't feel captivating in the slightest. While some viewers may be annoyed by the standard array of tropes and clichés that the show consists of, others don't really care about them.

Instead, they are more concerned with the personalities (or lack thereof) that the writers have given not only to the main characters but also to the supporting ones.

“This is the first time I have seen one where the God and the human are both so morose. Not tortured souls, not heartbreakingly lonely, not full of angst, but just unlikably morose,” Redditor KDramaTipsy said, adding to the discussion.

That wasn't the only opinion. Unfortunately, there were only a few people who were actually inclined to like at least one character from the cast. Even though both Jang Dong-yoon and Nana did a great job with the script they were given, it's the quality of said script that was lacking.

If you are still interested in seeing My Man Is Cupid, you can tune in every Friday and Saturday on Amazon Prime.
