It was a smart move after all.

The Big Bang Theory was an iconic CBS sitcom that followed the lives of nerdy scientist friends.

Among other struggles of adulthood, the main characters explored the dating market. Amy and Bernadette were introduced as potential love interests along the way.

As it turns out, Mayim Bialik, who portrayed Amy, joined the show for more than just a passion for acting.

Just like us, the vast majority of celebrities weren't born into the industry and didn't have immediate access to the career they wanted. They had to prove themselves in order to get all the benefits that come with fame, and that is no easy task considering how competitive actors are.

Even those who have tasted fame may not find the lifestyle that comes with it suitable. As a child actress and star of the iconic sitcom Blossom in the '90s, Mayim Bialik grew up to become a dedicated scientist who wasn't planning on returning to film anytime soon.

Her joining The Big Bang Theory was just a coincidence, but the coincidence was truly written in the stars.

Today, it’s hard to imagine anyone else portraying the character that Amy Farrah Fowler is. Though controversial, she proved herself to be a perfect match for Sheldon Cooper, even if it took them three full years to finally get that sweet first kiss, and another two to get intimate with one another. Maybe she was perfect, and maybe there just wasn’t anyone quite as patient.

Either way, Mayim Bialik’s portrayal of Amy is a perfect combination of absurdity and comedic timing, which the actress nails perfectly. To think that if it wasn’t for the flawed U.S. healthcare system, the viewers would’ve lost their perfect Amy is truly horrifying. However, that is true.

Speaking to The Social back in 2021, the actress admitted her true motives for starting the auditions and eventually landing The Big Bang Theory:

“I had a toddler and a newborn and I had been a grad student and my insurance was expiring. I figured if I can just get even a couple of jobs like here or there, I’ll be able to get insurance again. <...> I did not expect to be a regular on a television show,” the actress shared.

Fortunately, it all worked out for the best. Bialik's children got the health care they needed, and her mother found her way back to comedy and television. Since Big Bang Theory, the actress has also starred in another sitcom, Call Me Kat, and hosted the game show Jeopardy.

If you are feeling nostalgic and want to revisit The Big Bang Theory, you can stream the whole show, or just a few of your most favorite episodes, on Max.
