The show’s legacy lives on in the strangest forms.

Summary:

  • Gilmore Girls was one of The CW's (formerly The WB's) earliest hits, airing from 2000 to 2007.
  • The show followed the daily lives of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, a mother and her teenage daughter.
  • Fans now believe that in the alternate universe, one of Rory's most controversial love interests, Dean, would have been a perfect match for her mother.

Although many people believe that once a show ends, the fandom it had immediately evaporates, this is often not the case. The more viewers a show has during its run, the more chances it has of attracting new people decades after its premiere. Gilmore Girls is one of the best examples of this.

One of the things that makes the show so popular is that it appeals to a wide range of ages. While some of the OG fans used to identify more with Rory, they have grown up and face the same issues as Lorelai. This also makes more viewers think about the on-screen relationships and all the possibilities the show missed out on.

Did Dean Love Rory?

One of the most controversial characters on the show was Dean Forester. Portrayed by The CW's rising star Jared Padalecki, he was Rory's most prominent love interest, even though many people didn't believe his feelings were true.

The thing that made fans turn their backs on Dead (and Rory, for that matter) was that he cheated on his girlfriend with Rory. However, many people now think that Dean was just born too late and would have been a perfect addition to the Gilmore family if he had been in a relationship with Rory's mother Lorelai instead.

It's a wild idea at first, but once you get past the obvious age difference and the way the show is set up, their personalities would have made a much more balanced match. The kind of match that could get them through all the battles.

Dean would have been a beacon of stability that Lorelai so desperately craved and tried to find in every other man she dated. He would have been devoted to her, constantly praising her, and standing by her side when she needed him. They would have been a couple that would have conquered all of the city's events and killed them at every turn, which is, after all, the sweetest union imaginable.

So if the writers had just decided to switch things up and have Rory meet an intellectual like Max (the age-appropriate version, of course) and have Lorelai fall in love with a man like Dean, the show might have taken a completely different turn. It wouldn't be the Gilmore Girls we know and love, though, so maybe what was done was for the best.

If you love the show the way it is and are thinking of giving it another shot, you can go ahead and join Lorelai and Rory Gilmore in their daily struggles by streaming Gilmore Girls on Netflix.
