Maybe we're better off without it if we want more TWD content in the future.

The Walking Dead has finally come to an end after 11 seasons, with the final episode, titled Rest in Peace, predictably breaking fans' hearts.

Now, it turns out that the end could have been entirely different — and perhaps the decision to go for the finale that we ended up seeing was the best decision made by the crew.

A sneak peek into The Walking Dead alternate ending was offered by the show's cinematographer Duane Charles Manwiller on Instagram, with the pictures showing the older versions of child characters. One of the photos features a line-up of actors who could have portrayed grown-up versions of Judith, Gracie, Coco, and R.J.

Tearful fans have spotted heart-wrenching details like grown-up Coco wearing the hat previously owned by Rosita (who was bitten by a zombie and killed off in the series finale). However, despite the nostalgic vibes that the pictures from would-be ending give, people are happy with the fact that the show went for the finale it had.

"I'm very glad we got the ending we did, imagine it being another decade with Rick and Michonne still AWOL," Twitter user BoYoungGeo said. "Plus most of the characters would be pushing 50/60, and that would be weird to think about."

Besides, the alternate ending, even though it feels "more conclusive", kind of ruins the ambitious plans to expand The Walking Dead universe with several spinoffs that are already in the works. The alternate ending would ultimately disclose everything about the fate of the child characters, basically leaving no space for spinoffs to develop them or even create some sort of intrigue to keep viewers hooked.

"But at the same time we would've lost our child actors that have grown on us. Until Rick & Michonne gets their timelines explained especially with the a timejump, the original ending is perfect," Twitter user imjustZACHARY noted.

Among the announced TWD spinoffs are Dead City, Daryl Dixon which are set to premiere in 2023, as well as untitled Rick and Michonne spinoff, which will begin filming in the same year.
