Try to rewatch it well into your adulthood.

There has been a lot of talk about Glee over the past few years. While some of the reasons for the show's second wave of fame in an online community are happy, with former fans simply remembering the joy of the show that got them through the hard times, others focus on the negatives.

From on-set drama to poor portrayals and unnecessary forgettable characters, many go so far as to claim that Brad Falchuk, Ryan Murphy, and Ian Brennan are the worst people alive for what they have done with the show.

While there are a plethora of moments that should have been handled differently and come across as downright offensive in 2023, there's also a huge misconception about the show. It was never meant to be taken this seriously.

In fact, the unexpected blow of fame that the show experienced in 2009 and 2010 is exactly what made it so difficult to continue.

It is pretty obvious that the first season of Glee did not take itself nearly as seriously as the other seasons. The characters and the situations they end up in are supposed to be wacky and over the top, and Glee does a great job of setting the stage for an incredibly ironic high school.

The show did have a message, but it wasn't quite as filled with social issues as it has been since season 2.

Though the message of acceptance and being yourself was very much needed in teen TV dramas, the ironic setup of Glee messed with the delivery and created some controversy that may take some joy out of it years later.

If you look back at all the seasons of the show the way it was meant to be perceived, as a comedic and very exaggerated version of reality, you won't see so many problems in it. Glee was never meant to be a rulebook for young people to follow, but rather an ironic representation of all the real-world issues they might have to face one day.

If you want to re-watch Glee now, 8 years after the last episode aired, and see how it holds up today, you can stream the show on Hulu.
