HBO Max' latest crime drama starring Ansel Elgort just premiered to favorable reviews from critics and viewers. Some people are already starting to ponder 'Tokyo Vice' possible renewal for a second season. So, can it really happen?

'Tokyo Vice ' TV series is based on a true story – or, to be more precise, on a hugely successful nonfiction book by American reporter Jack Adelstein, which in turn is based on his own experience as a foreign reporter working for a traditional Japanese newspaper. 'Tokyo Vice' is an ongoing drama in its first season, and not a miniseries, as many people were led to believe.

Without knowing how the series is going end it's hard to talk about possible second season. But even if the series finale puts an end to the Elgort character's story arc, HBO Max will surely have ways to continue the potentially hit series. Here's two ways how the 'Tokyo Vice' second season can actually be done.

1. An anthology series

HBO Max can certainly use recent anthology trend taking many streaming services by storm. If 'Tokyo Vice' becomes a hit, why not produce 'Paris Vice' or even 'Moscow Vice'? Stories of American reporters working abroad are pretty common and can be used for compelling subsequent seasons. Peeking into different cultures around the world is always interesting, so the creation of 'Vice'-Verse is definitely a plausible possibility.

2. Jack Adelstein's multiverse

American reporter wrote three bulky books on the subject of Japanese crime underworld, so why not adapt them for future seasons? If Elgort decides to leave the series, HBO can always hire a new actor as Adelstein himself ages between books.

Adelstein's latest book 'Pay the Devil in Bitcoin' is centered around the creation of Bitcoin and a huge fraud-scandal that surrounded it.

A pretty fascinating subject, don't you think?

Of course, this is just speculation; as of yet there are no official statements from HBO regarding the future of 'Tokyo Vice'. We just have to wait and see.
