And welcome her long-forgotten version back.

Summary:

  • As the Young Sheldon finale approaches, the Coopers' family dynamic becomes more and more reminiscent of The Big Bang Theory.
  • Mary Cooper, who briefly left the church, was finally appreciated by fans, but it didn't last long.
  • Now back in religion, she's likely to grow into the devout woman we've seen in The Big Bang Theory's Mary.

One of the things that resonates most with Young Sheldon fans is the dynamic between the members of the Cooper family. Some might call the family dysfunctional, and knowing how things ended on The Big Bang Theory, they would be right. However, no matter how flawed each of the characters is, they have tried their best for each other.

And it is only now, as the show approaches the equator of its final season, that viewers are finally beginning to understand and appreciate that.

Although Mary Cooper has always been the most controversial of The Big Bang Theory's characters, since the end of season 6 and the beginning of season 7, she has slowly started to get into the good books of the fandom.

The trip to Germany changed her life as much as it changed Sheldon's. Too bad she ended up back in her old ways.

Why Did Mary Cooper Return to the Church?

Easily manipulated and misguided in her good intentions, Mary has always been looking for something to devote herself to. While many viewers would argue that she could easily focus the attention she gives to religion on her two other children, Georgie and Missy, she herself believes that it is God who deserves her time.

There is nothing wrong with being religious and using it as a moral compass, but throughout the series, Mary has been known to take it too far, to the detriment of family relationships. The brief glimpse of her without religion made young Sheldon fans appreciate her personality more than ever.

After the draft, however, she returned to God in a more radical way than ever before, joining a new church with even more radical views and sending in her donations.

Knowing what comes next from the lore set up in The Big Bang Theory, it's easy to see how Young Sheldon paves the way for Mary to reach the point of complete devotion to religion, to the point of absurdity. Right now, in Young Sheldon, she has her husband by her side, and his presence can somehow soften the blow.

But once George Sr. is gone, there will be no one to guide Mary to the right side of things. Since she's so prone to being drawn to the most insane causes, it's very likely that she'll end up in some kind of radical movement after his death.
