Love Lies Bleeding’s actress saw the Twilight saga’s real meaning years after the movie series was over.

Even though it’s been more than 10 years since things about the Twilight saga quietened down completely, no one really forgot about the epic vampire love story, and even the movies’ leads now see the movies in a pretty different light.

Not having addressed the issue for years, Bella Swan’s actress Kristen Stewart reflected on her breakout role around a year ago, somehow drawing a parallel with her own experience of coming out as a queer woman and, well, starring in a pretty much heterosexual franchise.

With that in mind, Stewart now sees her role in Twilight as something she was in fact meant to do rather than what alienated her from her current acting path.

Kristen Stewart Says ‘Twilight’ Is “Such a Gay Movie”

The actress, who has been openly gay since 2017, revealed in a 2024 interview with Variety that, despite not having a single hint at a possible same-gender relationship, Stephanie Meyer’s book series had this queer vibe that Stewart looked for in her further projects — and she never noticed that.

“I can only see it now. I don’t think it necessarily started off that way, but I also think that the fact that I was there at all, it was percolating. It’s such a gay movie. I mean, Jesus Christ, Taylor [Lautner] and Rob and me, and it’s so hidden and not OK”, the actress said.

She also added that Twilight might seem like a weird, but still outright love story, but in the end it turns out to be a tale about hidden desires.

“I mean, a Mormon woman wrote this book. It’s all about oppression, about wanting what’s going to destroy you. That’s a very Gothic, gay inclination that I love”, Stewart stated.

‘Twilight’ Fans Say Kristen Stewart “Did What She Could” Portraying Bella

It’s fair to say the movies had a lot of issues with the original books’ fans, but Kristen Stewart definitely had the biggest wave of hatred that the saga has ever experienced.

However, while many blamed Stewart’s lack of acting skills for completely ruining Bella’s image in the movie adaptations, others felt like the problem wasn’t the actress at all.

“Kristen did what she could with what she was given. Bella was funny at times in the books, but in the movie her humor falls flat with the other characters or the moment is just too uncomfortable. They shouldn’t have taken that direction”, Redditor whatitdewwbabyyyy commented in a thread.

“The only thing I didn’t like about Kristen was that in the books Bella cries a lot and we got none of that from the movies”, Connect_Ad1138 reflected on the matter in another thread.

“I think she was the perfect Bella, but the scriptwriters really did her a disservice by excluding Bella's silly jokes and sarcastic demeanor. We had a couple moments of her jokes, but that was it”, GingrrAsh chimed in.
