Coopers aren’t that bad of parents.

Summary:

  • Young Sheldon is a CBS sitcom that was created as a prequel to The Big Bang Theory.
  • The show tells the story of Sheldon Cooper’s family and their lives in Texas in the 1990s.
  • Sheldon’s younger sister is deemed neglected by the majority of fandom, but other viewers beg to differ.

It is not surprising for the fanbase to pick favorites in any show, even when it comes to children. Young Sheldon's viewers happened to know who Sheldon was from the beginning, and as much as people love his quirks and flaws, he was never meant to be the most relatable of them all.

Instead, the fandom's favorite was Missy. Playing almost the same role as Penny in the adult Sheldon's life, Missy was always a character the audience understood the most. Because of this, she had the most support in everything she wanted to do, and there was always a fierce reaction when the writers threw a curveball at her.

What many people saw in Missy's case was parental neglect. Throughout the 6 seasons of the show, she was always somewhat left behind, not having the same autonomy as her older brother Georgie, and not having the same support that her twin Sheldon was given.

But neglect is too strong a word, and some viewers take it quite seriously.

Will Missy Cooper Apologize To Sheldon?

One of the moments that still sparks arguments in every Young Sheldon fan space is whether or not Missy should apologize to her brother for saying she hates him. While some feel that the sitcom can't end on a happy note without the twins making up in the sweetest way possible, others feel that Missy had a right to say such strong words.

After all, her whole life she's seen nothing but her brother's constant coddling, while she's never been able to get what she wanted without fighting for it. Of course, it wasn't Sheldon's fault, it was his parents' fault, but her childish mentality wouldn't allow her to figure that out and choose who to blame.

What is certain, however, is that Missy was never really neglected. In fact, her parents were always very attentive, always drove her to school, understood her problems with friends, and paid attention to those friends as well.

It was Mary who knew who to call when Missy ran away with Paige, and it was Mary who Missy brought in when she thought Paige was in trouble. George was there to support her steps into sports, which she clearly recognized and appreciated at the time. Are they the best parents ever? Not at all.

But to say that Missy was neglected, when in fact she had a better relationship with her parents than, say, Bobby, with his always-late mom, is not sensitive to the real struggle some kids face.

If you want to continue to see Missy's character growth in Young Sheldon season 7, be sure to tune in to CBS on February 15, 2024, to not miss the premiere of the final season.
