Sure, we all love a good TV show, but there's nothing more heartbreaking than watching a once-beloved series trip over its own shoelaces after an awe-inspiring first season.

1. "True Detective " (2014-present)

Once in a blue moon, a TV show comes along that's so jaw-droppingly fantastic, it leaves us mere mortals with our faces plastered to the screen. "True Detective" Season 1 was one such masterpiece. It revolved around detectives Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson) as they delved into the eerie, grim world of ritualistic killings in Louisiana. With its non-linear storytelling, compelling dialogue, and outstanding performances, it had viewers, critics, and conspiracy theorists alike going gaga. Sadly, its second season failed to capture the same magic, despite a solid cast. The series has experienced a roller coaster of quality since, but it's never quite matched its freshman year's riveting brilliance. Trivia alert: Did you know that McConaughey initially read for Hart's character? However, he found Cohle's nihilistic outlook more enticing.

2. "Heroes" (2006-2010)

"Heroes" began as an intriguing exploration of everyday people discovering superhuman abilities. The ensemble cast and diverse plotlines interwoven with themes of destiny, responsibility, and hope had audiences glued to their sets in Season 1. It was compelling, it was nuanced, and it had a time-traveling Japanese guy who was everyone's favorite. However, the following seasons couldn't carry the torch. Plagued by narrative inconsistencies, poorly handled character arcs, and an infamous Writer's Guild strike, the show ended up far from super. "Heroes," with a Rotten Tomatoes rating that plunged from 82% for Season 1 to a dismal 50% for Season 2, stands as a stark example of the peak-in-first-season syndrome.

3. "Prison Break" (2005-2017)

"Prison Break" is an interesting case. The concept of the show – a brother willingly getting himself jailed to break out his wrongly convicted sibling – was thrilling, innovative, and had audiences biting their nails down to nubs. With intricate plans tattooed on his body, Michael Scofield's (Wentworth Miller) daring breakout scheme was a narrative masterpiece in the first season. But, oh boy, what followed was an increasingly convoluted series of far-fetched events that failed to maintain the momentum. Seriously, how many times can one man break out of prison?

4. "The OC" (2003-2007)

You remember "The OC," right? The sun-soaked teen drama that gave us Seth Cohen's witty one-liners and the unforgettable phrase, "Welcome to the O.C., bitch!"? Its inaugural season was a zeitgeist-defining phenomenon, a smartly written drama that balanced melodrama with humor and heart. However, post-Season 1, the series got stuck in a whirlwind of outlandish storylines (psycho Oliver, anyone?). Not even the quirkiness of Adam Brody could save this sinking ship from hitting the seafloor of mediocrity.

5. "Glee " (2009-2015)

This musical-comedy-drama mashup was a breath of fresh air in its debut season, breaking stereotypes and belting out toe-tapping covers. Its blend of music, wit, and heartfelt storytelling, coupled with poignant commentaries on social issues, was an instant hit, and the response was nothing short of epic. Sadly, the choir's harmony began to sound discordant from the second season onwards, with bloated cast additions, repetitive plotlines, and lackluster renditions. By the end of it, "Glee" was a mere shadow of what it once was.

6. "Dexter" (2006-2021)

"Dexter" introduced us to a serial killer we couldn't help but root for. Michael C. Hall's portrayal of Dexter Morgan, a blood-spatter analyst with a lethal side job, was a high point of television in its first season. The show masterfully blurred the lines between right and wrong, hero and villain, all the while creating a chilling, thrilling cat-and-mouse game that was as suspenseful as it was addictive. However, subsequent seasons saw the show dive into the deep end with outlandish plotlines and character choices, culminating in a universally maligned series finale. Jeff Lindsay, the author of the books the series is based on, wasn't a fan of the show's ending either. He was quoted saying he thought it was "very unsatisfying."

7. "House of Cards" (2013-2018)

"House of Cards" started strong, presenting a complex, dark political world filled with intrigue, power plays, and two of the most fascinating anti-heroes in recent memory. Kevin Spacey's Francis Underwood was a captivating, ruthless politician, whose rise to power, coupled with his breaking of the fourth wall, was nothing short of mesmerizing in the first season. But as the seasons went on, the narrative began to buckle under its own weight. The departure of Spacey, following off-screen controversy, led to an even sharper drop in quality, with the final season garnering a disappointing 65% on Rotten Tomatoes.

8. "Westworld " (2016-2022)

Based on Michael Crichton's 1973 film, "Westworld" debuted on HBO with an engaging and philosophical exploration of artificial intelligence, free will, and what it means to be human. With a top-tier cast, including Anthony Hopkins, Thandie Newton, and Jeffrey Wright, the series felt like a thought-provoking puzzle in its first season. However, subsequent seasons got tangled in their own complexities. Plotlines became more convoluted, and the show's philosophical pondering sometimes felt more pretentious than profound. The audience's confusion mirrored that of the characters lost in their timelines. Nolan and Joy, the showrunners, offered to release a video explaining the entire plot of Season 2 to thwart spoilers. Turned out, it was an elaborate Rickroll.

9. "The Handmaid's Tale" (2017-present)

In the wake of its acclaimed debut season, "The Handmaid's Tale" was hailed as a timely, impactful exploration of a dystopian society. The first season closely followed Margaret Atwood's eponymous novel, offering a chilling, incisive look at a world where women were subjugated in the name of religious extremism. But as the show moved beyond the source material, it fell into a repetitive cycle of despair and shock-value storytelling that didn't have the same impact or thematic richness as its inaugural season.

10. "Homeland" (2011-2020)

"Homeland's" first season was a taut, suspenseful thriller that had viewers on the edge of their seats. With Claire Danes as the brilliant but bipolar CIA agent Carrie Mathison and Damian Lewis as the possibly turned POW Nicholas Brody, the show was a fascinating exploration of trust, loyalty, and paranoia. However, with Brody's storyline wrapping up in the third season, the series lost much of its focus and tension, becoming a more conventional spy drama that couldn't recapture the electrifying magic of its initial run.
