10 Most Hated TV Characters, Ranked From Bad to Irredeemable
Ranking unpopular characters on popular TV shows.
It may seem counterproductive, but every great show requires at least one character that the audience hates. However, that doesn't mean these characters have to be stereotypical villains. Rather, some of the most hated TV characters of all time went from tolerable to irredeemable simply by making bad choices or exhibiting annoying habits.
Discover the 10 most hated TV characters, ranked from bad to irredeemable:
#10 Janice Litman-Goralnik (Friends)
It never took long for Friends viewers to spot Janice Litman-Goralnik, thanks to her infamous nasal voice. Friends was one of the most popular comedy sitcoms of the '90s, and it excelled at blending multiple colorful characters together.
Janice Litman-Goralnik, portrayed by Maggie Wheeler, annoyed fans not only with her distinctive laugh, but also with her repetitive catchphrase: "Oh, My. God."
#9 Andrea Harrison (The Walking Dead )
Played by Laurie Holden, Andrea Harrison was initially an asset to the small group of survivors. She was tough and independent, providing a strong female presence in the camp.
Unfortunately, her unexpected relationship with the Governor, along with several other questionable decisions, caused fans to turn against Andrea.
#8 Ted Mosby (How I Met Your Mother)
It's ironic when the main character of a TV show turns out to be the least likable. But that is exactly what happened on How I Met Your Mother. Ted Mosby started out as the relatable, genuine guy that most people wanted to root for to find love.
However, the character became increasingly frustrating to viewers as the show progressed into later seasons. Ted could never get over "the one" and often came across as self-centered, while the supporting characters were much more fun and likable.
#7 Ross Geller (Friends)
Sorry, Ross, you're a decent guy, just out of a group of six main characters, you were the least likable. Also, with storylines revolving around divorce, parenting, and career struggles, Ross was not always in the most uplifting episodes, but was necessary for the show to progress.
Eventually, fans got really annoyed with him. And the never-ending drama with Rachel didn't really help his cause.
#6 Andy Bernard (The Office )
Andy Bernard also shares the unfortunate situation of being the most hated character on a TV show full of beloved cast members. As a result, like Ross from Friends, it wasn't that fans hated Andy, but rather the situations the show's writers put him in.
In fact, Ed Helms did a great job of making Andy the chaotic mess he was, from his constant need to please others to his hidden, violent temper. However, Andy became a tool by the time he tried to take over the office from Michael Scott.
#5 Betty Draper (Mad Men)
Betty Draper (January Jones) was one of the many fascinating characters on Mad Men. At first, most viewers sympathized with the trophy wife stuck in a depressing suburban life while her husband cheated on her with anything that moved.
Yet by the end of Mad Men, most had turned against Betty. It didn't help that the character was often cold, immature and hostile compared to the charming Don Draper.
#4 Piper Chapman (Orange Is the New Black)
Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) was the baddest chick on a show about female inmates at Litchfield Penitentiary. And that made her one of the most hated characters on television.
To many, Piper was seen as a waste, coming from a privileged background but wasting it all with selfish behavior and actions. Nobody likes to see someone destroy their own life with arrogance. Piper did just that.
#3 Lori Grimes (The Walking Dead)
Lori Grimes is the only character on The Walking Dead that fans hated more than Andrea Harrison. It was hard to support the character from the day she was discovered cheating on Shane while assuming Rick was dead.
The reckless decision making only got worse from there as Lori became one of the most hated TV characters of all time.
#2 Skyler White (Breaking Bad )
Breaking Bad is one of the greatest television shows of all time. It had many characters who either started out good and gradually got worse, or vice versa.
Skyler White (Anna Gunn) was definitely a great example. At first, she did no wrong as the loyal, supportive wife of Walter White. However, by the season finale, most had already turned on Skyler for various reasons.
#1 Joffrey Baratheon (Game of Thrones )
Joffrey is easily the most hated television character of all time. He was the constant thorn in Sansa Stark's side for the first few seasons and really made viewers want to reach across the screen and strangle him.
