The king of comedies stars in the controversial feature, coming to Netflix this week.

Summary:

  • Netflix will soon add Adam Sandler ’s romantic comedy, severely panned by critics.
  • It follows two single parents hating each other who end up being together on a trip to Africa with their families.
  • Despite the critics’ hate, the audience praises it for the actors’ chemistry, calling it a charming family movie.

There is no doubt that everyone saw at least one of Adam Sandler’s comedies, for example, Big Daddy (1999), Click (2006) or Grown Ups (2010). At the same time, the actor’s comedy talent shines even brighter when his movies are added by the romantic aspect, with his romcoms being loved by the audience, but not so recognized by critics.

One of these features is a 2014 romcom, in which he portrayed the widowed father Jim, who goes on an unsuccessful blind date with another single parent, Lauren. They both decide they don’t want to see each other in their lives ever again. And yes, you may have already recognized the plot of Blended here.

However, life plays its typical trick on Jim and Lauren, causing the two families to accidentally meet at the same African safari resort, being put together for a "familymoon". There the two are forced not only to find a common language, but also love and decent examples for their children to follow.

Although this movie is full of so-called toilet humor, usual for Sandler’s comedies, it clearly stands out due to raising essential family issues. Besides, the actor’s chemistry with the daughters’ actresses is so cute that they won’t leave you indifferent.

Moreover, it features a great tension between Sandler and his co-star, the brilliant Drew Barrymore. This romcom became their third collaboration after The Wedding Singer (1998) and 50 First Dates (2004) and, maybe, even the most successful one.

Was Blended Really a Bad Movie?

However, it all didn’t help the movie not to be panned by critics, as it gained a shameful 15% of critical acclaim on Rotten Tomatoes. It is claimed to be sexist and retrograde towards children’s upbringing, and we are yet to mention the criticism regarding the unfair depiction of Africans as servile, dancing simpletons.

At the same time, the audience’s score of the movie, titled Blended, is not so horrifying, equalling 64%, and it turns out that most of the simple viewers don’t share the movie’s hate.

“It may be cheesy and cliche but it has lots of charm,” admits Redditor @Azuzu88.

Indeed, the movie’s light-hearted and amusing nature is quite a reason to have a rest watching it, as it’ll be available on Netflix already on May 1.
