Time to check out something different from Silo.
In search of something painfully emotional and thought-provoking? Then the show we are about to tell you is definitely your best choice. The Leftovers definitely pushes the boundaries of traditional television.
The series was created by Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta and was based on Perrotta’s novel of the same name. However, it was only the first season that was literally inspired by the book, the next two seasons were mostly made up.
The Leftovers debuted on HBO in 2014 and ran for three seasons. It is set in a world where, without any warning, 2% of the population mysteriously disappears in an event known as the “Sudden Departure.” The events that follow are predictable: the world suffers. People cry over the loss of their loved ones and are left desperate to find out the truth about what happened.
Why Does The Leftovers Stand Out?
Anyone who watched the show will say for sure that it’s not your typical sci-fi series about solving a mystery. Instead, it's a story about enduring grief, tragic loss and the search for meaning in a new reality in a world where everything is now uncertain.
However, rather than focusing on the reason that caused the terrible event, the series makes it its mission to explore the psychological and emotional aftermath for those left behind. Seeing how people deal with the terrible things life throws at them definitely makes you think...
It's important to note that this is not an action-packed drama; the events of the series unfold slowly, giving the audience time to absorb them one tragedy at a time.
“If you are ready to commit to a really slow burn post apocalyptic with a bunch of biblical themes then watch. It is one of the greatest shows of all time but the average crowd will say “it’s slow and boring”. I recommend not binging and taking in the content one episode at a time,” one Redditor said.
Another reason to watch the show is the incredible performances, especially by Justin Theroux, who plays Kevin Garvey, a conflicted police chief (Silo fans, how are we doing?) trying to hold his life and family together during the chaos. Carrie Coon is also brilliant as Nora Durst, a woman who has lost her entire family in the Sudden Departure and is struggling with her grief.
The Leftovers is available to stream on Max.
