Disaster movies are making an epic comeback this summer, and you don’t want to miss it.

Summary:

  • Disaster films used to be a big thing, trending in the 1990s and the 2000s.
  • 1996’s movie Twister follows a married couple of storm chasers who risk their lives to test an experimental weather alert system against huge tornadoes.
  • On July 19, 2024, Twisters will premiere, rebooting the original film with new special effects and Top Gun: Maverick’s Glen Powell leading the cast.

Disaster movies are amazing at making you feel the thrill and terror of facing tornadoes, tsunamis, earthquakes, or volcanic eruptions that make your mundane problems dwarf and disappear without leaving the comfort of your home. Once forgotten, this spectacular genre returns in summer 2024 with a Top Gun: Maverick star leading the way.

Twister Made Winds Terrifying

In 1996, the original Twister movie showed the world just how overwhelming the power of tornadoes truly is. In Twister, a married couple of storm chasers goes through hard times and is nearing a divorce, but their personal problems suddenly shrivel at the face of danger. To save people from massive tornadoes, they must risk their own lives and test an experimental advanced weather alert system… In person.

Twister perfectly shows just how tiny and insignificant humans and their problems are in the face of towering nature and how naive our sense of superiority on the planet truly is. While not a cult classic, it’s one of the best disaster movies out there — and this summer, a reboot of Twister is hitting the theaters with all-new effects.

Maverick Star to Multiply Twisters

What will be so different about the new movie about storm chasers battling giant hurricanes, you may ask? First of all, it’s no longer Twister; it’s Twisters, many of them. Second of all, it’s the long-awaited (by us, at least) return of the disaster movie genre that seemingly died off after being so prominent in the 1990s and the 2000s.

Glen Powell, the Top Gun: Maverick star, and War of the Worlds’ Daisy Edgar-Jones will lead Twisters into a new era. The upcoming movie is set to premiere on July 19, 2024, so watch out: this summer, there might be a little more windy than usual. But honestly, after so much time without big-scale disaster movies, we’re down for it.

Let’s just hope that director Lee Isaac Chung hasn’t lost his skill since I Have Seen My Last Born, shall we?
