‘28 Years Later’ Writer Calls Out Marvel’s Role in Sequel Burnout

Alex Garland speaks on Marvel overuse of sequels. Will 28 Years Later fall victim to the same curse? Here's what we think.
28 Years Later is the highly anticipated continuation of the beloved zombie franchise. However, beneath the general excitement for the next installment, one of the film's writers shared a deeper concern.
Danny Boyle & Alex Garland Talk About Sequels’ Place in Hollywood
In their interview to Business Insider, both Boyle and Garland shared their opinion on sequels.
Boyle's take: sequels make a lot of money. That's why studios keep doing them.
“Obviously, studios are profit machines, they are driven by that. And so they're alert to what works, and so they tend to lean on sequels if they can, because it gives them a measure of security,” he said.
Garland's take: sequels make way less money when the original. Marvel is the one to blame.
“I think sequels are seen as diminishing returns. I don't wanna sort of throw shade as it were, but Marvel has something to do with this. It's not a criticism of Marvel, I just think people got oversaturated,” the writer pointed out.
Moreover: Garland believes that because of that, it is now easier to make original movies. Yet Boyle had a different idea, saying:
“Well, I'm not sure a lot of other people would agree with that. I think your original films… I think it's quite tough for people to get original material made.”
Fans Are Excited About ‘28 Years Later’
Despite Garland thinking that sequels make much less, fans are still excited for the return of the franchise. There’s been a lot of theories made already (and the movie hasn’t even come out yet!). So it’s very possible that 28 Years Later will not be affected by that sequel curse.
“Dude I haven’t been this excited about a movie in years. This movie was in my top 3 as a child and to have the third come out after I turn 30 is epic,” Redditor Bob_bob_bob_b wrote.
“I'm really stoked for this. I hope its going to be as good as the trailer looks. The last time I got excited about a trailer, it was for Prometheus and...I have thoughts about that movie,” another fan, moogylouchu on Reddit shared.
